Nia Long & Larenz Tate Reunite as Ambassadors for the 2025 American Black Film Festival (ABFF)

Some love stories never fade—especially when they’re etched into the cultural fabric of Black cinema. This year, Love Jones stars Nia Long and Larenz Tate are set to take center stage once again, not as co-stars in a film but as the official Ambassadors for the 2025 American Black Film Festival (ABFF).

ABFF, now in its 29th year, is the premier festival celebrating Black storytelling in film and television. Taking place in Miami Beach from June 11-15, with a virtual extension on ABFF PLAY from June 16-23, this year’s festival promises to highlight Black excellence in the industry like never before. Long and Tate, whose careers have been synonymous with groundbreaking performances, will help further ABFF’s mission of uplifting and creating opportunities for Black filmmakers and creatives.

In addition to their ambassadorial roles, Long and Tate will participate in ABFF Remembers: Love Jones—a special event celebrating the film that helped define a generation’s take on love and artistry. The two stars will share behind-the-scenes memories from the set, discuss the impact of the 1997 romantic drama, and reflect on their decades-long friendship. The night will be elevated by a live musical tribute featuring selections from Love Jones’ unforgettable soundtrack—a collection of jazz, poetry, and neo-soul classics that helped cement the film as a cultural touchstone.

For festival founder Jeff Friday, Love Jones holds special significance. Witnessing the film at another festival in the ’90s helped inspire him to create ABFF, giving Black filmmakers a dedicated platform to showcase their work. It’s only fitting that nearly three decades later, the stars of that very film are now leading the charge in celebrating and uplifting the next generation of Black storytellers.

Beyond their Love Jones connection, both Long and Tate have had lasting impacts on Hollywood.

Long, a four-time NAACP Award winner, has defined what it means to be a leading lady, with unforgettable performances in The Best Man franchise, Boyz n the Hood, and Big Momma’s House. This year, she’s set to star in one of the most highly anticipated films of the decade—Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic hitting theaters on October 3, 2025. She’s also preparing for the release of her memoir, further solidifying her role as a cultural icon.

Tate, known for his ability to bring depth and authenticity to every role, has continuously pushed the boundaries of storytelling. From his gritty performances in Menace II Society and Dead Presidents to his more recent work as Congressman Rashad Tate in Power Book II: Ghost, he remains a force in Hollywood. Beyond acting, Tate is an advocate for Black creatives, co-founding TateMen Entertainment and producing content that amplifies Black voices—including the hit podcast Bronzeville, which has amassed over 20 million downloads.

Since its inception in 1997, the American Black Film Festival has been the go-to platform for showcasing Black excellence in film and television. It has helped launch the careers of many of today’s biggest names and continues to push for equity and opportunity in an industry that has historically sidelined Black creators.

With Nia Long and Larenz Tate leading the way, ABFF 2025 is shaping up to be a historic moment for both established and up-and-coming filmmakers. Whether you’re attending in Miami or tuning in virtually, this is an event that no true fan of Black cinema should miss.
