Metalcore Rockers Split Tung on Band Formation, Creative Process, and More

In this candid interview with The Hype Magazine, the Metalcore band Split Tung opens up about their origins, songwriting, balancing day jobs, and what’s next.

In a recent conversation with Metalcore band Split Tung, I had the chance to dive deep into the band’s history, creative evolution, and plans for the future. I first met Elle and Eyon in Houston, TX during the Track Society “Track Meet 2024” masterclass, an independent music creators summit. I was facilitating Mock Editorial Interviews for the summit presented by Track Society a 501 (C)(3) at the famous Avant Media Institute of which they are alumni. Elle was my engineer for the interviews and Eyon happened to be on the interview roster as well. Elle (bassist – no press photo available) joined the band a bit later, but her entry was equally fascinating. Initially brought in for a one-off performance, she impressed the band so much with her skill that she became a permanent member. That kind of natural integration is rare, and it’s clear that Elle brings an energy and talent that fits seamlessly into the group.

Split Tung’s Songwriting: A Collaborative and Fluid Process

When it comes to songwriting, Split Tung doesn’t stick to a rigid formula. Joan usually sends guitar riffs to Eyon, who then builds the drum parts. Once the instrumental foundation is laid, Santi steps in to write lyrics, drawing from personal experiences and emotions. Elle comes in towards the end of the process, creating bass lines that bring everything together.

What really stands out about their songwriting is the fluidity and freedom they allow themselves. Eyon, who works as a windmill turbine technician, often travels, but the band uses technology to stay connected. The band’s versatility extends beyond their music. Elle, for instance, also works as a sound engineer, contributing her skills to the recording and mixing process. This DIY spirit reflects the band’s commitment to owning their craft and building their sound independently.

What’s Next for Split Tung? New Music and Performances on the Horizon

Despite the challenges, Split Tung is gearing up for exciting new projects. They’re currently in the final stages of mastering an upcoming EP, which will expand their catalog beyond their first two singles. With a live performance set for November 8, 2024, at Black Magic Social Club, it’s clear the band is ready to bring their evolving sound to even more listeners.

Their immediate goal is to conquer the local Houston scene, but Split Tung has bigger ambitions. The band hopes to eventually expand to other cities, taking more control of their promotions and tours. It’s clear they’re not just thinking about the next gig—they’re planning for long-term success.
