'A poet is a witch...' begins Blue Nimbus, the debut poetry pamphlet from Paull Blakeman. Across a sequence of twenty poems, he explores the archetype of the 'Witch' and provides her with a new sense of agency and urgency, illuminating the hidden alchemy between witchcraft and poetry.
As both a feminist and queer icon, the witch as transfigured in this sequence facilitates an internal dialogue through poems that are at once immediate, confessional, and daring. The cornerstone of his collection is the long poem, 'Windle,' dedicated in honour to Isabel Robey who was executed as a witch in 1612.
Through his rich imagery, lyrical style, and uniquely fresh approach to traditional metre, form, and rhyme, this collection contains an exciting new voice in poetry that calls to mind Anne Sexton's 'Transformations'.
