To even imagine being a young same-sex couple in the 30’s and 40’s is terrifying, but being an interracial relationship makes it unfathomable. William Howard was born in 1924 as sole heir to the family’s steel fortune. At the age of eight, when the depression was in full force and other wealthy families were hiring bodyguards for their children, he was sent to stay with his grandmother in Harlan, Kentucky. There he met Michael, a boy of the same age with dark sparkling eyes and onyx skin. After what was supposed to be a short stay in Kentucky turned into years, William and Michael became inseparable and in love. Through the death of Michael’s father and both of William’s parents, racism, homophobia, and an accidental murder the two were able to survive because they faced it all together...for a while.
