Highlights of 2012-2013: Century Academy

Century Academy’s Social Science teacher Owen Ryan used Cash 4 Conejo Classrooms grant money to purchase a digital camera for the Yearbook Class.

Mr. Ryan wrote: “The camera will allow us to take higher quality pictures for our yearbook and enable us to start building an inventory of equipment. As a new school we have very little at the moment. We have about 90 students in the school with about 12 in the yearbook class.”

“This grant was incredibly helpful…The class is excited about using the camera and can’t wait until we see the results once our 2013-2014 yearbooks arrive next year. “

Highlights of 2012-2013: Westlake High School

WHS AP Biology teacher Jennifer Boyd used her grant to purchase supplies for a lab to study a bioluminescent marine dinoflagellate. Approximately 100 students participated in this lab; covered topics include enzymes, photosynthesis, and animal behavior.

Students used this lab to review photosynthesis, cell structures, and enzymes. This lesson also introduced circadian rhythms and bioluminescence.  They practiced using microscopes to view the cells and took home a small vial of the cells to make observations at different times during the day and night. They were very excited to take home their own personal vials to show their family and friends. The cells will continue to glow for 3-6 months.

Ms. Boyd wrote: “I am so excited to do this lab with my students and I know it will be something they will never forget. Thank you for allowing me to be creative in my classroom.”

Highlights of 2012-2013: EARThS Science Magnet School

Teacher Laura Pewe used her grant to purchase supplies for each of her 4th grade students to create a beautiful nature journal, an activity based on John Muir Laws’s book, Opening the World Through Nature Journaling. This project greatly enhanced the students’ study of Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa in Newbury Park and our surrounding area.

Students illustrated their journals using watercolor pencils.

“…this grant was very helpful as it provided necessary supplies needed for individual students to create and express themselves through technical drawing.  This supports EARTHS’ philosophy of teaching through curricular integration.  Thank you so very much for providing this very important program that directly benefits Conejo Valley students.”

- Laura Pewe, 4th grade teacher, EARThS Science Magnet
