At Ladera Elementary School, the history of the Conejo Valley comes alive through scrapbooking!

Cash 4 Conejo Classrooms is pleased to again provide support to the wonderful scrapbooking projects going on in 3rd grade at Ladera. Congratulations to teachers Constance Cordeiro-Weidner and Randee Levy for their effort to create a fun and memorable enrichment activity that students will long remember.

Ms. Weidner receives her grant for the project she designed for her 3rd graders, based upon the book, Discovering the Story of the Conejo Valley, by Miriam Sprankling.  She is holding just one of many beautiful books created by her students that will become lasting keepsakes.

Ms. Weidner’s students are so enthusiastic about making scrapbooks while studying the history of the Conejo Valley.

Ms. Weidner wrote: “I have done this project with my third grace classes for many years, and returning students always tell me how much they loved the unit and that they still have their books! “

 

This year fellow Ladera 3rd grade teacher Randee Levy will also make these scrapbooks with her students. She is very enthused about the project.  We are happy that both classes will be able to participate!

More great things are happening at Colina Middle School!

Two Cash 4 Conejo Classrooms grants were awarded at Colina in January. Congratulations to teachers Monica Beck and Monica Kern for their enthusiasm and inspiration to students.

8th grade teacher Monica Beck poses with her class behind their “Flipped Future” service project. Featured are flip flops hand made and decorated by students to honor retired Colina teachers, counselors, and administrators. Ms. Beck has incorporated creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking into a most meaningful tribute to the service of others.

Ms. Beck wrote: “The students will create stepping stones in the form of a flip flop with the retiree’s name and date that he/she retired carved into it. Although they have retired, their flip flop indicates the impact they still have on the future.”

 

In the History/Social Science department, teacher Monica Kern will use grant money to purchase build a class library for study of the Middle Ages, with a focus on examples of visual art work that was so important at a time when few people could read.


Ms. Kern wrote: “Student learning is a process, and I believe this process begins by creating a desire to learn. What better way to nurture my students’ desire to learn than through Primary/Secondary source text and art work… sources [that] will offer my students first hand accounts of history during the Middle Ages while enriching their academic vocabulary, encouraging their written communication, and providing them endless opportunities for creative expression.”

Teachers at Sequoia and Redwood Middle Schools are doing great things!

Exciting things are happening all over CVUSD. Congrats to 2 middle school teachers for winning grant money to start the year off great!

At Sequoia, Music teacher Tina Huang received funding to buy essential instructional supplies for the brand-new strings class. These students will have the benefit of new bows, rosins, tuners, and music stands.

 

At Redwood, 8th grade teacher Laura Detweiler will purchase common core resource books  for Social Science and Language Arts.

Highlights of 2012-2013: Ladera Elementary School

At the end of the school year,  Ladera 3rd grade students went on a field trip to the California Science Center and the Space Shuttle Endeavor, funded by a C4CC grant awarded to 3rd grade teacher Stephanie Lopez.

Ms. Lopez wrote:

“This grant allowed all students the chance to see the Endeavour and other exhibits at the Science Center free of charge. In preparation for this field trip students learned about the solar system, planets, the sun and moon, and previous shuttle trips. Approximately 62 students benefited from this grant. Students were able to see the size of the space shuttle, touch different pieces of the shuttle, such as the tires and jets, and watch footage of the its’ landing and transport to the Science Center. The students greatly enjoyed this field trip as it made subject matter come alive and provided real world application.”

Ms. Lopez’s class have a photo op in front of The Endeavor.

Highlights of 2012-2013: The Gold Rush Comes to Maple & Aspen Elementary Schools

At Aspen Elementary, 4th grade teacher Lori Brown brought the El Camino Real Naturalists’ living history program, “Gold Rush Days” to her students.

Ms. Brown describes the activities:

“Program highlights included: Storytelling, guitar pickin and harmonica huffin’ by authentically costumed historical interpreters, a look at how the journey to California was made and the hardships travelers faced along the way, a comparison of the lives and fortunes of gold miners and merchants, a visit to the general store and gold miners’ camp, & hands-on activities demonstrating a typical gold miner’s day.”

More gold rush activities happened at Maple!  4th Grade teacher Patricia VanOmmeren was awarded a grant to bring the on-site filed”Gold Rush Day” field trip to her students as well.

 

Ms. VanOmmeren says:

“‘Gold Rush’ on site at Maple provided 64 students including our special education population with ‘hands on’ experiences relating to the gold rush times, culminating with panning for gold.”

Below, students pan for gold, hang clothes to dry, enjoy storytelling, and write letters using quill pens & ink.
