Holland’s studio representatives in Atlanta suggested that GRAMMY Award-winning producer Kevin Bond would be an immaculate fit for Holland’s potential Gospel music recordings. Upon meditating on the Lord, the lyrics came to him. “He Is,” discusses all the things that God is and the amazing blessings that his faith has done for him throughout his years as a songwriter. Holland’s original idea for the “He Is” music video was to incorporate the scenery of water. However, the outcome of his collaboration with the videographer was bigger than anything either of them could have imagined.

The music video features Holland strolling through a peaceful park, rich with greenery and life on a bright, cloudless day. Scriptless and natural, Holland is seen bathing in rays of sunlight, accepting peace and wisdom from God. Holland described the video shoot as a very special experience that was simply a blessing. “People were stopping their walks and watching us,” said Holland. “If you watch the video, you can see that it was meant to be. People were seeing us and just being inspired.” This song and video are so impactful that even after its ending, God’s gift follows Holland, and even his viewers, off-screen.

Holland says that “Are You Ready For Your Blessing,” was given to him by God after the lyrics and melody came to him in a dream. Both repeating in his head, Holland grabbed his tape recorder and found God’s finger pointing at him. The message he received was that God had been by his side for a long time and he needed to write a powerful piece of music for those searching for faith. Holland’s wish for his audience is that everyone feels the presence of God through his music and videos. It is not so much about getting down on one’s knees in prayer once a night, but that no matter the day of the week, the world will start to walk in prayer together, that a journey with the Lord is only one footstep away. “Be sincere with God and he will be sincere with you,” says the Gospel singer. “Trust in him, treat everyone the way you want to be treated and God will acknowledge you. The key word is sincerity. You can’t fool God about anything.”

What inspired you to first start making music? Did you always know you wanted to be a musician?

I always enjoyed songs on the radio and in school. Once being involved in choruses in school the thought was more believable and more desired.

How does your faith influence the messages in your music and guide you as an artist?

My faith is my main focus. It is my main objective in song. To share and inspire the word of God.

Talk to us about your writing process for “Are You Ready For Your Blessing” and “He Is.” Did you draw inspiration from specific experiences or memories?

In the “He Is” video I wanted to express the environment of our God. The air and trees for example. So I decided to take a walk in song. Freedom Park located in Charlotte, North Carolina was the perfect place. In “Are You Ready” which is an upbeat song I wanted to raise spirits by dancing along with teaching and praising The Lord. The visuals that me and my team delivered tell a story. Awesome.

Both “Are You Ready For Your Blessing” and “He Is” have an energetic, inspiring feel—how do the production elements help to amplify the vibe of these tracks? What distinctive elements did you incorporate into these songs to keep the energy up?

The energy is the promotion of The Lord. Comes naturally with sincerity. God shall script it all.

What visual elements in the “Are You Ready For Your Blessing” lyric video stand out to you? Why did you choose to accompany the song with these elements?

Visual elements help to tell your story and also inspire and entertain. Trees and beautiful surroundings express God in “He Is.”  Dancing and preaching in “Are You Ready” raises spirits. Stairs into the Heavens signifies being accepted by God. People worshiping shows the energy of worshippers.

Who could you have not done the “He Is” music video without? What was your collaboration process like?

Working with my producer Ron Bridges is phenomenal. We both have insight into imagery and so we really inspire each other.

What goals do you hope to achieve in your musical career next?

Use music to promote The Lord And He shall assist in your endeavors. That is my goal. To keep making inspirational music and videos for the world is my future goal. Also to promote my new song “My God Is Amazing.”

My name is Craig “Mr. Groove” Lane, and I’m a producer and part of DEF MACHINE. My musical journey was profoundly influenced by legendary groups like Parliament-Funkadelic and artists like Chick Corea. The concept of “Breaking Thru” resonated deeply with me, sparking the creation of our song. As the idea evolved, the addition of a choir brought everything together seamlessly.

Rap and gospel are powerful mediums for storytelling. What inspired you to blend these genres together for this particular song? How do you believe they complement each other in conveying your message?

The fusion of gospel and rap in this song stemmed from the notion of overcoming life’s hurdles. With the addition of the choir, the vision solidified into a harmonious blend. Working with MOD Diggidy and DEF SQUAD THE BAND was an exhilarating experience. Each artist brought their unique strengths to the table, fostering a dynamic energy that truly defined the essence of the final track. Despite the challenges of distance, our collective history of collaboration facilitated seamlessly.

What themes or messages did you aim to convey through the lyrics and visuals, especially considering the fusion of rap and gospel elements?

The conceptual inspiration for the music video was to breathe life into a chapter from the Book of Revelation. We sought to capture the intensity and vivid imagery of the end times, crafting a visual narrative that amplifies the song’s message and leaves a lasting impact.

Were there any specific visual elements or settings you wanted to incorporate to enhance the storytelling?

Absolutely, we were meticulous in selecting the perfect setting—a church with the right ambiance and atmosphere—to elevate the storytelling and immerse viewers in the narrative we aimed to convey.

What do you like about making Gospel and soul music with the amazing voice you have?

I love to sing and I am a believer in the gospel…I guess it’s just an awesome blessing to share your faith and do what you love.

Why do you believe it is important to create a song with a powerful message in your music?

Because for me, music is an intimate thing. When I sing a song about something I have gone through I’m wide open while doing so. So the best thing I can do is be open to the truth and transformative message of the one who provides the will to overcome anything. The power of the message already exists, I’m just honored to be a voice that can help share it. So many people are going through unimaginable pain. People need encouragement …and hope!

What are some verses that you hold onto?

Ps 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise… I love this verse and another  Pro 15 vs 1 A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger… there are so many great ones!

What’s your favorite part about making music videos?

 I adore the creative process but the best part is to share the message I’m singing about in a relatable, easy way!

Any collaborations you’d like to do in the future?

 There are so many, of course, my favorite singers CeCe Winans and Candi Staton, but I also love Maverick City, Elevation Worship, and lots of indie artists that I respect.

Where do you want to be in the next 5 years?

Spreading the gospel in song, sharing this good news, and always helping people know that they are not alone.

The Powerhouse Fellowship Soul Choir proclaims their faith through song, and their song “God is Good” is the ultimate anthem to what they believe in. They recognize all the good that God has put into their lives, and their gift to return to him is praising his work through song. Just saying his name collectively acts as a prayer full of love and hope. Through layered harmonies between multiple voice groups, the male and female voices join forces to create one voice, one family serving God. “God is Good” is a celebration of being children of God and thanking him for bringing life to them.

Showcasing the district of Scarborough of Toronto, Ontario, the Powerhouse Fellowship Soul Choir takes listeners on a spiritual journey as they sing in the wonderful world God has given them. The choral group is seen singing and moving in sync; each singing with their arms open to the sky and smiles on their faces. Shawn Cotterell and each member of the group and their church, from the past and present, are highlighted throughout the video as disciples of God. They are living proof that He lives in each of them and they are blessed to live next to one another and sing together.

The Powerhouse Fellowship Soul Choir Weighs in!

Could you tell us about the formation of the Powerhouse Fellowship Soul Choir back in 1986?

The choir was formed in 1986 for a building fund program for our church. We were a children’s choir called the Scarborough Church Youth Choir and was under the leadership of Jackie Nelson-Burke (the pastor’s daughter). We were a hit performing 3 songs at West End Church of God of Prophecy 1780 St Clair Ave West in Toronto. Soon after that performance, we began singing at various churches, concerts, and conventions. Macella Freeman (Sister Pat) who was the head of the Children’s ministry of our church was responsible for providing opportunities for the choir to sing at such events. By 1989-1990 the choir roster was no longer a local one but began to be more of a community choir. We were growing into our teens and the name was changed from the Scarborough Church Youth Choir to the Powerhouse Fellowship Soul Choir.

How does each member of the group contribute with their creative style?

As a collective our personal experiences, our backgrounds, life and personal relationships with God are strong contributors to our choir’s overall style and themes in each song we sing or select. As a choir, we are also a diverse group of singers, ages ranging from 18 years old to 60 years old. Some are 1st generation or 2nd generation Canadians. We have choir members whose backgrounds came from Ghana, Haiti, Paris, France, The UK, Jamaica, and other parts of the Caribbean. As for me, I am a 1st generation Canadian born to parents who migrated from Jamaica to Canada 50-plus years ago. I am also a church kid born and raised in the church during the 70s 80s and 90s. The music, the sounds, and my culture (Canadian and Caribbean) are also contributing factors that influence my choir’s sound and themes for our project. All of those experiences and influences will be present in our upcoming recording project “Reflections”

Do you find it difficult managing such a large group of musicians; or have you found a rhythm after all of this time?

Yes, I do find it difficult managing a large group of singers and musicians as well as managing a record label all at the same time. But I am passionate about music and there is a joy in bringing people together to sing.

Where did the idea for “God Is Good” come from?

What did the songwriting process look like? The song “God is Good” came out of time when I was dealing with an illness during the pandemic. As I reflected on life, I Thanked God for it all, the good and bad. Coming out of the sickness, I woke up early one morning and got an idea for the chorus and concept for the song. I shared the idea with my record label rep from MNRK Nashville and he connected me with the right producer to produce the track. It took a few months to get the lyrics and melody together.

What is the main message you want your audience to take away from “God Is Good”?

The main message I want the audience to take away from God is Good is that whatever your situation or circumstance you may be facing. God is still Good through it all.

What was the inspiration behind the “God Is Good” music video?

I wanted to showcase the city of Scarborough (a suburb of Toronto) as Scarborough is where the choir hails from and over the years the city has had a negative rap. Growing up in Scarborough has been a great experience for me and I have so many wonderful memories. I wanted to use this video to promote my city and showcase Toronto as Toronto is a great city. I also wanted to visually say Thank You and honor those individuals who have made a positive and lasting impression on my choir and myself. Going back to places where the choir first got started, or places where I grew and developed as the person who I am today.

Honorees include Bishop Hubert L Martin and First Lady Bonnie Martin of West End Church of God of Prophecy (my birth church). Pastor Jasper Nelson and sister Erma Nelson pastors the Scarborough Church of God of Prophecy (the birthplace of the Powerhouse Fellowship Soul Choir). Bishop Dr. Audley James Senior Pastor and founder of Revivaltime Tabernacle Downsview (RTT) They provided many performance opportunities for the choir, rehearsal space and helped me develop as a praise and worship leader. Marcella Freeman, director of children’s ministries and the late Amoy Levy, one of my first choir directors where I learned about directing and stage presence.

I also wanted to use this music video to honor the memory of choir member Suewane Harris. Suewane had been battling with Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) disease and died in 2019. She was the most decided choir member who would never miss a rehearsal or gig. During my difficult times, Suewane prayed with me and encouraged me, even while she was in the hospital after her many surgeries. She would be so proud of the music video and where the choir is today. We wore purple ribbons which are the colors of HS. We wanted to bring awareness of this condition.

I also added some recent photos of some OG choir members at the top of the video and added some Toronto Gospel artist cameos. some music groups from my church from the 1970s and 1980s and old vinyl records of US Gospel artists who helped define the choir’s sound throughout the years.

I wanted to share my narrative and my community on a global stage and say THANK YOU to my city. That was the intention of the concept.

What has been your proudest moment as a group so far?

One of our proudest moments so far was sharing the stage with GRAMMY award-winning legend Stevie Wonder back in 2015 at David Foster’s Charity fundraiser in Toronto. Recording our Christmas single entitled “The Manger” with guest lead vocalist GRAMMY Award-winning songstress Chrisette Michele and charting on Billboard Gospel Airplay in the top 100 back in 2018

What can fans expect next from you?

The Powerhouse Fellowship Soul Choir is preparing to record new music for our upcoming full-length project entitled “Reflections”. In a few weeks, we will be filming our second music video.

We will be releasing two singles this summer. “More” is an original song written by our very own choir member Chevon Gilzene as well as “Ahead By A Century” We put a gospel choir spin on a Canadian Rock classic from Juno Award-winning band “The Tragically Hip”. The track is produced by multi-talented Juno Award-winning producer Tim Abraham.

Motown Gospel has just released the new single and video for “Werking” from their newest artist, Me’Kayla. At the youthful age of 20yrs old Me’Kayla is putting her own spin on a classic message declaring that “my angels are ‘werking’ for me”.  Joined by Sir the Baptist’s ChurchPPL, this song carries an optimistic carefree tone that is sure to turn any gloomy day into sunshine and smiles. When asked about the release, she says, “The fact that my debut single is out now is mind-blowing to me! I’m so grateful for all the work everyone has put in to making this possible. I really hope people enjoy the music and the video as much as I do!”

Though Me’Kayla is part of the Gen Z era, her inspiration comes from legends long before her time. Legends including Little Richard, Ray Charles, Luther Vandross, Dawkins & Dawkins, and The Clark Sisters.  In her words she says, “I’m just a church girl from Tallahassee, FL, and I’m beyond blessed to call Motown Gospel my home. This journey is a dream come true, and I can’t wait to share my music with the world.” One of her inspirations, Kim Burrell, is actually who discovered her on Instagram. After hearing her sing, Burrell called Harry Connick Jr. who then reached out to Motown to create the relationship. Based on Connick’s rave review of her, Motown then signed her while she was in the 12th grade.

This discovery came on the heels of her initial acclaim to fame as a featured vocalist on Tennessee State University’s Grammy Award-winning LP, The Urban Hymnal. It won “Best Gospel Roots Album” in the 65th Annual Grammys Award ceremony in 2023 and was produced by Sir the Baptist.

“Werking” is the first single released from Me’Kayla’s highly anticipated EP, Prelude, which is set to be released at the beginning of April 2024. Both the single and video are now available on all digital streaming platforms.

Soulful renditions by icons like Gladys Knight, Kirk Franklin, and Fantasia, as well as the spirited collaboration of Snoop Dogg, the late Rance Allen, and The Clark Sisters, take the audience on a trip down memory lane. Performances from Doug E. Fresh, Donnie McClurkin, Kierra Sheard Kelly, and The Player’s Choir featuring Jekalyn Carr and Ben Tankard get viewers lifted, while the powerful voices of Yolanda Adams and Le’Andria Johnson create an emotional crescendo. L. Earl Entertainment, also the invited to sing at New Christ Memorial Church in Los Angeles CA, by the late, great Pastor Andraé Crouch. He invited her to go into the studio to record background vocals on Marvin Winan’s song ” All Because Of Jesus ” Pastor Andra Crouch said ANITA has the voice of a young Mahalia Jackson.

Anita’s success has never stopped as she was a featured vocalist in the highly anticipated musical, A Love to Call My Own, by K.T. Price, which featured Grammy award-winning R&B star Tank, at Hampton University. Anita’s career has traveled through different areas of this business, her being a part of a tapping by Gospel music radio host and promoter, Ed Stephens, to perform on a gospel cruise with Tye Tribbett, the late Rev. Timothy Wright, and Damon Little, etc.. In 2015 ANITA landed a part as an understudy in the stage play, I Need A Man, by Michael Matthews, in 2017, she was featured in the stage play (The Deadly Weapon) by producer/writer Zina E Williams. Anita is now under the amazing management of Zina Williams who brings the next level for Anita to grow and be the best that she can be in the entertainment business and she is looking forward to letting God use the gifts that he has given her, for His continued glory.
