The Recording Academy® has announced that the iconic roots musician Taj Mahal will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award during its Special Merit Awards Ceremony. The event will take place on February 1, 2025, at the historic Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles as part of GRAMMY® Week festivities. This prestigious award recognizes Taj Mahal’s monumental contributions to music alongside fellow honorees such as Frankie Beverly, The Clash, and Roxanne Shante.

New Album ‘Swingin’ Live at the Church in Tulsa’ Garners GRAMMY® Nomination

Taj Mahal’s latest album, “Swingin’ Live at the Church in Tulsa,” earned a Best Traditional Blues Album nomination at the 67th Annual GRAMMY® Awards. Recorded live at Tulsa’s historic Church Studio, the album highlights Mahal’s signature genre-blending style. Featuring classics like “Corrina” and “Queen Bee,” the album showcases the mastery of Taj and his Sextet, augmented by guest artists Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley.

The recording space, steeped in history, was once home to Leon Russell’s Shelter Records and has been restored as a state-of-the-art studio, paying homage to Tulsa’s rich musical heritage.

A Legacy of Roots Music Excellence

At 82, Taj Mahal stands as a cornerstone of American roots music. With a career spanning six decades and nearly 50 albums, he has earned four GRAMMY® Awards and influenced generations of artists, from the Rolling Stones to Angelique Kidjo. Known for blending genres such as blues, soul, jazz, and Caribbean music, Taj remains a prolific collaborator, working with legends like Etta James and Ziggy Marley.

“Music is in my DNA,” Taj reflects. “It’s about dedication, evolution, and celebrating the rich cultural legacy passed down by our ancestors.”

Reflecting on Tulsa’s Historic and Cultural Impact

The album’s location, Tulsa, Oklahoma, carries deep cultural and historical significance. Known for its contributions to jazz and blues, Tulsa was also the site of the Greenwood neighborhood, tragically destroyed during the 1921 Race Massacre. Taj Mahal highlights the region’s struggles and resilience, emphasizing its role in shaping the American music landscape.

“A tremendous amount of music and art has come out of Oklahoma,” Taj says. “It’s a testament to the perseverance and creativity of the people there.”

The clinical psychologist says that simple joys like spending quality time at the beach can also change perspectives for the better. Whether it’s basking in the sun, splashing in the water, or simply being present with oneself and absorbing the surrounding, a day at a beach can serve as a metaphor for balance, which is of utmost importance in work and life.

Dr. Meleeka Clary is also the visionary behind the Dr. Meleeka clary show, which debuted in 2023 and quickly became the beacon of hope for many. The show is all about positive psychology, blending practical advice on overcoming personal and professional challenges with insights into systematic issues like those present in the judicial system. Besides this, she has excelled as a filmmaker, as mentioned above. Her film, Three Corners of Deception, which is based on her personal 15-year battle with her ex-husband, dives deep into the corruption within the legal system.

Her film’s powerful subject, inspired by her personal life incidents has resonated well with those who went through similar experiences and has also shed light on the urgent need for judicial reform. TYGA, the rapper and fashion icon, was supposed to be the host but he ended taking over as DJ and kept the party pumping all day long. I mean people were astonished and dancing at the same time because it was non-stop jamming and here is this multi-platinum and Grammy nominated artists keeping the party live. They had glam sessions poolside with NYX Pro Make-up artists, live performances and exclusive collaborations from streetwear and design legends like Chicago Bulls design advisor Don C, Foot Locker’s first women’s creative director Melody Ehsani, vintage purveyor Sean Wotherspoon, and Freddie Gibbs ice cream.

After arriving at the Ranch, parking wasn’t egregious, you made your way towards where the music was coming from only to be stunned by a rather large enclave in the middle of a horse ranch. There were about 6 make-up stations for NYX Cosmetics with the hottest celebrity photographer in Los Angeles (ShotbySham- Sham Adobo) taking stunning pictures of the people all around.

It was a sea of people at the ranch in Palm Springs, and everyone was ecstatic and raving about the other host Chole Cherry from the Prime Time Emmy winning show Euphoria. This event embodied the spirit of the Coachella Arts and Music Festival weekend, carefree vibes, cool conversations, fashion, good music and good times. Not one hint of turmoil or animosity, and people were glad to be outside in a safe environment.

Foot Locker Collaboration unveiling was an amazing thing to see. Melody Ehsani really showcased an amazing set of clothes that I can’t wait to get my hands on. It was worth taking time out of the day to start the weekend off with a slam dunk.

When you arrive, you will be greeted by a gracious host staff that will assist you in whatever you need. Pool side is where I spent all of my time. This is the 13th installation of Desert Gold which is a part of the Coachella Music and Arts Festival weekends. including live performances by Sudan Archives and Esty; resident DJs Pangea Sound and Chulita Vinyl Club; a Future Classic night and with Desert Gold mainstay The Do-Over returning for their annual Sunday throwdowns. Los Angeles-based Analog Culture Collective In Sheep’s Clothing will take over The Amigo Room at the hotel, curating nightly DJs as well as a beverage program inspired by the former In Sheep’s Clothing hi-fi bar. Ace Hotel & Swim Club will also unveil its new, large-scale mural on the Commune wall from artist Kris Chau.

I’ve never had so much fun just sitting by the pool and enjoying live music and performances. My favorite was Sudan Archives. She performed with her band that uses live violins in their enthusiastic performance. The set went on as she performed all of her hit songs while people sang along and danced to the music while in the pool.

It was a very friendly environment, and it was a relief to being in the house almost exclusively for the last two year mostly due to the COVID 19 pandemic. I would strongly encourage anyone to add this to the checklist to visit while you’re in town for the Coachella Music and Arts Festival for Weekend two because round two of the festivities will Thursday, April 21st through the 24th.
