The post-production team of ReelShort, a trailblazing production company specializing in vertical television series, hosted The Hype Magazine at their home base, Crazy Maple Studios in Culver City, CA, for an in-depth discussion on the evolution of short-form storytelling. I got to moderate an engaging and informative junket-styled live session interview at the facility, which featured key team members, including director Yinghui Li, visual effects production manager Xyner Xu, and post-producer Adam Xing. Together, they shared insights into the creative and technical aspects of crafting content for platforms like TikTok, where audience engagement hinges on speed and innovation. The team introductions and company backstory were conducted by post-production producer Runyun “Martin” Li, who facilitated the exclusive conversation! I’ve shared some highlights of the conversation below, and the full session audio is available below this recap!

Shaping the Future of Vertical Storytelling  

ReelShort has positioned itself at the forefront of digital entertainment by producing content specifically for vertical viewing. With mobile-first consumption rising, the team emphasized adapting narratives to fit this new format.  

“The ability to tell compelling stories in a condensed and visually engaging way has become more and more important in the new digital era,” said Director Yinghui Li. 

She continues, “In traditional filmmaking, you have the luxury of time to slowly build up emotions over a 45-minute episode or a 2-hour movie. However, in vertical storytelling, you have much less time (sometimes only a few seconds) to emotionally engage your audience before they scroll away on their phone. Our goal is to tell stories that feel immersive and emotionally gripping within that limited time frame.”  

To achieve this, ReelShort employs a combination of fast-paced storytelling techniques, innovative shot compositions, and engaging sound design to captivate viewers instantly. Yinghui stressed that although the format is short, the quality of storytelling should not be compromised.  

Challenges and Innovations in Short-Form Production  

Unlike traditional filmmaking, short-form vertical content demands a rapid production cycle and precise execution. The ReelShort team highlighted the challenges of capturing audience attention within seconds, making seamless collaboration across directing, visual effects, and post-production essential.  

• Fast-Paced Creativity: The team works under tight deadlines to produce high-quality, engaging content that resonates with modern audiences.  
• Visual Effects as a Storytelling Tool: Xyner explained how VFX plays a crucial role in crafting immersive narratives, elevating simple concepts into visually striking experiences.  
• Cultural Influence in Storytelling: Adam discussed how diverse backgrounds shape the team’s approach to storytelling, making their content relatable to a global audience.  

“Visual effects aren’t just about adding spectacle—they’re about enhancing storytelling,” said Xyner. 

She added, “People often think of VFX as explosions, monsters, or sci-fi landscapes, but it’s much more than that. Even subtle effects, like adjusting lighting in post-production or blending practical and digital elements seamlessly, can completely change the feel of a scene. Our job is to make sure that every effect serves the story and doesn’t overshadow it.”

Meanwhile, post-producer Adam highlighted the importance of balancing creative ambition and the limitations of the vertical format.  

“We have to think differently when editing for vertical screens,” Adam explained.  

Continuing, he states, “You can’t rely on traditional cinematic techniques like wide establishing shots or long takes. Instead, you focus on close-ups, fast cuts, and movement that keeps the viewer engaged. Every edit and transition must be intentional—there’s no room for wasted frames.”  

Collaboration and Audience Engagement  

Success in digital content hinges on teamwork. The session underscored how effective communication between directors, editors, and post-production teams streamlines the creative process.  

Beyond production, audience feedback is a driving force for content development. The team closely monitors engagement metrics, using real-time data to refine storytelling techniques and cater to evolving viewer preferences.  

“We don’t just create content—we listen to how audiences respond,” said Yinghui.   

“The way people consume content today is very different from before. We take viewer feedback seriously and try to have a better understanding of what works and what doesn’t. It’s a continuous effort of learning and improvement,” she emphasized.

We dug into his new EP The Art of Pete, his unique blend of church influences and Southern sound, and the invaluable lessons he picked up at the Track Society Track Meet 2024 as part of its masterclass. Mr. Pete’s journey into music began in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic stopped everything. He returned to San Diego from Japan and, with extra time on his hands, visited a Navy friend’s home studio. “Once I got in there, it just stuck,” he recalled, marking the start of his passion for creating music.

In a recent conversation with Metalcore band Split Tung, I had the chance to dive deep into the band’s history, creative evolution, and plans for the future. The interview was packed with insights into how these musicians formed their sound, juggled life and music, and crafted their unique voices within the metal scene. It was an inspiring glimpse into the journey of a band poised to make a significant impact. I first met Elle and Eyon in Houston, TX during the Track Society “Track Meet 2024” masterclass, an independent music creators summit. I was facilitating Mock Editorial Interviews for the summit presented by Track Society a 501 (C)(3) at the famous Avant Media Institute of which they are alumni. Elle was my engineer for the interviews and Eyon happened to be on the interview roster as well. I had such an amazing time learning about them that we pulled the entire crew together for a fun and enlightening conversation. The full #LiveSession video is available below.

The Origins of Split Tung: Childhood Bonds and Musical Growth

One of the most intriguing aspects of Split Tung’s story is their deep-rooted friendship. Eyon (drums), Santi (lead vocals), and Joan (guitar) have known each other since childhood, growing up in the same neighborhood and forming multiple bands together over the years. It’s a connection that seems to fuel their music, giving them a chemistry that’s hard to manufacture.

Elle (bassist – no press photo available) joined the band a bit later, but her entry was equally fascinating. Initially brought in for a one-off performance, she impressed the band so much with her skill that she became a permanent member. That kind of natural integration is rare, and it’s clear that Elle brings an energy and talent that fits seamlessly into the group.

Split Tung’s Songwriting: A Collaborative and Fluid Process

When it comes to songwriting, Split Tung doesn’t stick to a rigid formula. Joan usually sends guitar riffs to Eyon, who then builds the drum parts. Once the instrumental foundation is laid, Santi steps in to write lyrics, drawing from personal experiences and emotions. Elle comes in towards the end of the process, creating bass lines that bring everything together.

What really stands out about their songwriting is the fluidity and freedom they allow themselves. The band doesn’t confine their sound to any one genre or style—they experiment with both heavy metal and softer elements, as showcased in their current singles “Zombies” and “Memory.” This creative approach keeps their music fresh and exciting, and it’s a sign that they’re still evolving as a band.

Balancing Life and Music: A Look Behind the Scenes

Like many rising bands, Split Tung faces the challenge of balancing their day jobs with their musical aspirations. Eyon, who works as a windmill turbine technician, often travels, but the band uses technology to stay connected. It’s a testament to their dedication that they continue to push forward despite the obstacles.

The band’s versatility extends beyond their music. Elle, for instance, also works as a sound engineer, contributing her skills to the recording and mixing process. This DIY spirit reflects the band’s commitment to owning their craft and building their sound independently.

What’s Next for Split Tung? New Music and Performances on the Horizon

Despite the challenges, Split Tung is gearing up for exciting new projects. They’re currently in the final stages of mastering an upcoming EP, which will expand their catalog beyond their first two singles. With a live performance set for November 8, 2024, at Black Magic Social Club, it’s clear the band is ready to bring their evolving sound to even more listeners.

Their immediate goal is to conquer the local Houston scene, but Split Tung has bigger ambitions. The band hopes to eventually expand to other cities, taking more control of their promotions and tours. It’s clear they’re not just thinking about the next gig—they’re planning for long-term success.

Ice-Grē has spent over 20 years advocating for the recognition of ACH. This genre embraces the traditional sounds of Hip Hop while creating space for the legends and veterans of the culture to thrive alongside modern artists. Ice-Grē has been at the forefront of creating a movement for an Adult Contemporary Hip Hop category—an idea that he believes will provide a home for artists who represent the genre’s foundational sounds, without being squeezed into the mainstream rap category. In his view, modern Hip Hop has been diluted by corporate interests, leaving little room for the sonic styles that defined earlier generations of the genre. His vision is to expand the category of Hip Hop at awards shows and on radio formats, making room for both the younger generation and the icons who helped build the culture.

“I’m not separating, I’m expanding,” Ice-Grē says, clarifying that the goal is not to divide the genre, but to create more space for diverse sounds. He draws parallels to radio formats like CHR (Contemporary Hit Radio) rhythmic, where sub-genres are differentiated based on their sound. For Ice-Gre, artists like Cordae, Joey Bada$$, and even legends like MC Lyte represent what Adult Contemporary Hip Hop could embody, bridging the gap between traditional and modern sounds.

A Legacy With Kanye West and the Return of Abstract Mindstate

Ice-Grē’s contributions to Hip Hop extend beyond his own artistry. He worked closely with Kanye West as one of the founding A&Rs of GOOD Music, helping Kanye build a label that would eventually become one of the most influential in Hip Hop. Despite his behind-the-scenes work, Ice-Grē never felt overshadowed by Kanye’s meteoric rise. After a 16-year hiatus, Abstract Mindstate made a powerful comeback in 2021 with the Kanye West-produced album Dreams Still Inspire on the YZY SND imprint. Kanye believed the world needed Abstract Mindstate’s message and sound, which he said had the potential to “heal people.” The album was well-received, and despite some distractions during its release, Ice-Grē remains proud of the work. He credits Kanye for recognizing the duo’s importance and bringing them back into the spotlight.

The Future of Abstract Mindstate and ACH

Looking forward, Ice-Grē is more excited than ever about Abstract Mindstate’s next chapter. The duo recently toured with Slum Village in Europe, and their upcoming album will be produced by Young RJ of Slum Village. With new music on the horizon and a growing conversation around Adult Contemporary Hip Hop, Ice-Grē is optimistic about the future of both his music and the genre he’s worked tirelessly to promote.

At 53, Ice-Gre feels he is living his 19-year-old dream, touring the world and sharing his music with new audiences. His mission now is to ensure that both veterans and younger artists can coexist, collaborate, and innovate in the same spaces, strengthening the Hip Hop community.

Expanding the Conversation at the Hollywood Independent Music Awards

Ice-Grē’s advocacy for Adult Contemporary Hip Hop reached a major milestone when the Hollywood Independent Music Awards introduced the category. Now serving on the board of the awards, Ice-Grē continues to push for greater recognition of artists who maintain traditional Hip Hop sounds but may not fit into the typical rap categories. He believes that with more doors open, the Hip Hop community can become even stronger.

“If we can get an artist like Ice Spice in the same room as MC Lyte, there’s a lot that can be learned,” Ice-Grē points out, stressing the importance of intergenerational dialogue within the Hip Hop community.
