Mark Briscoe - eMark Entertainment

Mark Briscoe – CEO & Founder of eMarc Entertainment

Mark, you and your brother Don co-founded eMarc Entertainment. Can you share what vision you had for the label when you started and how it has evolved since its inception?

Founding eMarc Entertainment was a significant milestone for both of us. From the beginning, our vision was clear: to create a diverse and inclusive platform that nurtures talent across all genres of music. Initially, our primary focus was on Hip Hop and R&B, genres that were close to our hearts and reflective of the vibrant musical culture we grew up with in Brooklyn. We aimed to discover and promote artists who embodied the spirit and innovation of these genres, while also bringing something fresh and unique to the table.

However, our love for music extends far beyond Hip Hop and R&B. Don and I have always been passionate about a wide range of musical styles, from Jazz and Rock & Roll to Country. This eclectic taste in music was something we wanted to infuse into eMarc Entertainment right from the start.

As eMarc Entertainment has grown, so too has our commitment to embracing musical diversity. We’ve expanded our roster to include artists from various genres, reflecting our belief that great music knows no boundaries. This evolution was driven by our desire to break free from conventional labels and categories, allowing us to explore and celebrate the richness of different musical traditions. Don, in particular, has always been someone who refuses to be confined to a box. His vision and open-minded approach have been instrumental in shaping eMarc Entertainment’s trajectory.

You’ve worn many hats in the music industry, from performer to producer. What motivated you to transition into music production and management, and how did these roles help you grow within the industry?

Transitioning to production and management was a natural progression for me, motivated by a desire to have a broader impact on the music industry. Initially, as a performer, I loved the thrill of being on stage and connecting with audiences. However, I soon realized that my skills and passions extended beyond just performing.

During rehearsals and studio sessions with my group DownStroke, it became clear to me that I had a knack for spotting talent and understanding the intricacies of music production. I was fascinated by the process of creating music, from the initial idea to the final polished track. This curiosity and enthusiasm drove me to learn everything I could about production techniques, sound engineering, and the business side of the industry.

One pivotal moment was when a local promoter invited our group to perform in the Village, located in NYC. The energy of the performance and the audience’s response were electrifying, but what struck me most was the realization that I enjoyed orchestrating the entire experience—ensuring everything ran smoothly, the sound was perfect, and the performance was memorable. This experience reinforced my decision to pursue production and management more seriously.

Transitioning into these roles allowed me to grow significantly within the industry. As a producer, I was able to shape the sound and direction of the music, bringing my vision to life while collaborating with other talented artists. It was incredibly rewarding to help artists develop their skills and realize their potential. Management provided a different kind of fulfillment, giving me the opportunity to mentor artists, guide them through the complexities of the industry, and help them navigate their careers strategically. This holistic approach to my career not only broadened my skill set but also deepened my passion for the industry.

Throughout your career, you’ve worked with notable artists and producers like DeVante Swing and Corey Rooney. How have these collaborations influenced your approach to music production and artist management at eMarc Entertainment?

Collaborations and mentorships have been instrumental in shaping my approach to music production and artist management. Working with industry legends like DeVante Swing and Corey Rooney has provided me with invaluable insights and experiences that have significantly influenced my career.

From DeVante Swing, I learned the art of creating a distinctive sound. His innovative production techniques and ability to blend various musical elements to create a unique, cohesive sound have greatly influenced my own production style. Observing his method of layering sounds and integrating intricate harmonies inspired me to experiment more boldly and push the boundaries of conventional music production.

Corey Rooney’s approach to songwriting and production, focusing on crafting hits with a broad appeal while maintaining artistic integrity, has also impacted my work. His knack for creating emotionally resonant music that connects with listeners on a deeper level has reinforced the importance of authenticity in my productions.

Working with these seasoned professionals has also profoundly impacted my approach to artist management. Their dedication to nurturing talent and developing artists’ careers has underscored the importance of mentorship. They taught me that successful artist management goes beyond business transactions; it’s about building trust, providing guidance, and helping artists realize their full potential.

Their emphasis on fostering a supportive and collaborative environment has shaped how I manage artists. I strive to create an atmosphere where artists feel valued and encouraged to express their creativity freely. This approach not only helps in developing a strong artist-manager relationship but also ensures that the artists are motivated and focused on their craft.

Collaborating with such influential figures has also shown me the importance of adapting and innovating. The music industry is constantly evolving, and staying relevant requires a willingness to learn and adapt. DeVante Swing and Corey Rooney’s ability to reinvent themselves and their music to stay current has been a key takeaway for me. It has encouraged me to stay open to new ideas and continuously seek ways to innovate in my production and management practices.

Following on from his brother Mark, Don Brisco whose path is one of a label side insider, talks about his journey and reprises Mark’s thoughts on vision and mission as well as his personal why.

Don Briscoe - eMark Entertainment

Don Briscoe – President / Co-Founder of eMarc Entertainment

Don, you started your music industry journey at Atlantic Records under the mentorship of Nesuhi Ertegun. How did this early experience shape your career, and what valuable lessons did you learn during your time at Atlantic?

The year was 1979. I was young, and Mr. Ertegun, whom I nicknamed Mr. Eliot Ness, gave me a shot after a family friend got me an interview for an internship. I literally begged him for that internship. When I told him that I love Jazz and John Coltrane was one of my favorites, he said, “When can you start?” Mr. Ness had been in the game for years, and I knew I could learn a lot from him. He made a call, and I was in.

At Atlantic, I learned the importance of perseverance and hard work. I didn’t see Mr. Ness a lot in those days—he was a busy man running other labels—but in our talks, he’d tell me how to navigate the complexities of the music industry and make deals. His mentorship instilled in me a strong foundation in the business side of music, which has been crucial throughout my career. I also learned about the value of caring for the art and the artist, building relationships, and the impact of having a mentor who believes in your potential. This experience shaped my approach to artist management and production, emphasizing the need to nurture talent and provide the necessary support to help them succeed.

After starting in A&R, you moved into the business side of the industry. What motivated this transition, and how did your background in A&R influence your approach to business affairs?

I started in the A&R department, but shortly after, someone discovered I was in college, so I was moved into Business Affairs. The transition was motivated by the recognition of my academic background and the potential for growth in a different aspect of the industry. While A&R allowed me to explore and develop talent, moving into Business Affairs provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the industry’s legal and financial facets. This shift was crucial in broadening my expertise and skill set.

My short tenure in A&R greatly influenced my approach to business affairs. Having firsthand experience with artists and their creative processes, I understood their needs and challenges better. This perspective allowed me to negotiate contracts and handle business matters with a more artist-centric approach, ensuring that deals were fair and beneficial for the talent. It also helped me bridge the gap between the creative and business sides of the industry, fostering a more holistic understanding of the music business. At Atlantic, I saw firsthand how labels care for artists beyond fairness in contracts, providing various resources and services to help them succeed in the music industry.

Your tenure at Zomba Music Group saw you facilitating deals for major artists like R. Kelly, Britney Spears, and NSYNC. What were some of the most memorable moments or challenges you faced during this period?

During my time at Zomba Music Group in the vibrant ’90s music scene, I had the privilege of facilitating deals for iconic artists like R. Kelly, NSYNC, Britney Spears, and more. It was an exhilarating era filled with chart-topping hits and groundbreaking talent. While I cherish the memories of working alongside industry giants like Paul Katz, Dan Zucker, and Richard Blackstone, I adhere to the principle of confidentiality in the music business. Despite any challenges or rumors that may have surfaced, my commitment to professionalism and discretion remains unwavering. As we reminisce about those dynamic years, I remain dedicated to upholding the integrity and privacy of all parties involved, ensuring that the focus remains on the artistry and achievements of the music industry.

In 2012, you and your brother Mark founded eMark Entertainment. What inspired you to create your own label, and how do you aim to differentiate eMark Entertainment from other labels in the industry?

Let me be clear, eMark Entertainment was founded in 1997, while my brother and I were both working with other labels. We incorporated the company in 2012, and it wasn’t until 2020 that we met Paul Ring of Bungalo/UMG and landed major distribution. The inspiration to start our label was to give artists a home where they could be nurtured, guided, and supported in their artistic journey. As industry veterans, we recognized the need for a label that prioritized artist development and creativity above all else. Our vision for eMark Entertainment was to create a platform where artists could thrive and express themselves freely, without the constraints often imposed by larger labels.

Differentiating eMark Entertainment from other labels in the industry is our commitment to personalized attention and hands-on support for our artists. We believe in building genuine relationships with our roster and understanding their unique talents, aspirations, and challenges. By providing tailored guidance, resources, and opportunities, we empower artists to reach their full potential and achieve success on their own terms.

Our journey with eMark Entertainment has been a testament to the power of passion and dedication in the music industry. From our humble beginnings to securing major distribution through Bungalo/UMG, we remain steadfast in our mission to elevate artists and celebrate their artistry. As we continue to grow and evolve, our dedication to fostering a creative and supportive environment for artists will always remain at the heart of eMark Entertainment.

As President of eMarc Entertainment, you oversee various business aspects of the company. How do you balance the creative and business sides of the industry, and what do you consider your most significant contribution to the music world?

Firstly, let me say that my brother handles the creative side of eMark, while I take care of the label and publishing side of the business. I negotiate and draw up contracts, deal with sync licensing, navigate various performing rights societies, and handle a host of other business-related responsibilities. Balancing the creative and business aspects of the industry requires a keen understanding of both worlds. While my brother focuses on nurturing artistic talent and fostering creativity, my role is to ensure the smooth operation and financial stability of eMark Entertainment.

My approach to leadership involves fostering collaboration and synergy between the creative and business teams, such as our accounting and monetization departments. By promoting open communication and mutual respect, we can effectively bridge the gap between artistic vision and commercial viability. This collaborative approach allows us to make informed decisions that benefit both our artists and the company as a whole.

In terms of my most significant contribution to the music world, I believe it lies in my dedication to advocating for artists’ rights and ensuring fair treatment in the industry. From negotiating equitable contracts to navigating complex licensing agreements, I strive to empower artists and protect their interests. Additionally, my commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment at eMark Entertainment has helped cultivate a thriving community of artists and creatives.

Along with Paul Ring and Universal Music Group, my brother Mark and I continue to lead eMark Entertainment into the future. I remain steadfast in my commitment to championing artists and advancing the music industry in a positive and impactful way. Through leadership, innovation, and dedication, I aim to leave a lasting legacy that inspires and empowers generations of artists to come.
