Craymo Talks Unity Anthem “One Love One World (We Are One)”

Growing up in The Sunshine State when new wave music was all the rage, Craymo was immersed in sonic vibrations that were unique, electrifying, and all-consuming. Between learning instruments; singing in choirs and then DJing in college, Craymo was ensconced in all things music and found the opportunity to write music that was in the style of his favorite musical trailblazers, all while creating something of his own. He always puts himself in an environment where any event or moment can translate into a lyrical reflection of an uplifting human experience.

Written back in 1993 when he was experiencing challenging, troubled times, Craymo was listening to the news and only heard of war, famine, and despair. That was his wake-up call to write the song of the summer, “One Love One World (We Are One)”, a wonderfully crafted anthem that gives voice to the voiceless in a world torn asunder. It inspires others to strive for a life of equality, unity, empathy and compassion. With this message, Craymo takes an uplifting approach with his voice and grooves, urging the human family to celebrate each other rather than sewing divisions. Despite moments of negativity, it’s important to focus on the positivity and harmony the human race experiences and to share that warm light to everyone’s lives.

In a room where a diverse group of people all wear white in unity, they are brought together by holding onto a silky, red ribbon, symbolizing the beating heart that we all share. Holding up signs and writing on the walls reading “equal” and “same as you,” this group finds comfort in their handprints that each has their own print, but each does the same thing. Intertwined are videos that highlight the beauty of human life, while the facial expressions of everyone show that it is their ideal life to live. It’s a message humanity is longing for, and one Craymo hopes you share.

What led to the creation of “One Love One World (We Are One)”?

I wrote “One Love One World” when my employer went bankrupt leaving me homeless, getting evicted from my apartment, and living in my car in Los Angeles in 1993. One night I was listening to NPR on the radio hearing horrible stories about the killing and torture of innocent women and children in Africa and the Middle East. The song came to me instantly.  I wanted to make a difference somehow by creating a song of love and hope for the world.  When 911 happened I immediately went to my songwriting partner and producer, Brandon Jarrett, and said I have this song, and the country and the world needs this now! We recorded and released the original version in 2001.  The song was a global hit among school children whose teachers downloaded the song, performing it at schools in the USA, UK, and Europe and it was used as a learning aid to teach English to impoverished children in Pang Liu Village in China. It was a top 10 free download on the United Nations Project UNESCO website http://www.nesongsforpeace.org for over 10 years!

Every 10 years I have created a new recording and new music video of the song.  This is my 3rd, which is a reggaeton version, I love the vibe of the reggaeton sound and feel it gives the song a fresh breath of air which we need in the world today with the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. It’s devastating and heart-wrenching. We need to unite, heal, and be civilized to one another. We need more love in the world, we always need more love.

Can you talk about any challenges you faced while creating “One Love One World (We Are One)” and how you overcame them?

Well, when it was coming up on the 20th anniversary during the Covid pandemic. We couldn’t film a new video due to social distancing so I had the idea to search through stock video and the visuals I found spoke to me as a Director and as an artist. They helped tell the story.

What artists or genres have had the most significant influence on your work?

Pop music has always resonated with my soul. Songs that make you want to sing along over and over again! John Lennon, Paul McCartney,  The Cars, Depeche Mode, Robbie Williams.

Can you share any behind-the-scenes moments or stories from the making of the music video?

I kind of had a vision of what I wanted but when I saw the red ribbon it all made sense. It represents the connection we have as human beings, we all have hearts, we all bleed blood, we are all one human race! The video came to life!

What symbolism or themes did you incorporate into your music video?

I believe the words written on the cards were very symbolic of the message and tone of the video. Equal, Same As You, and Stop The Violence. The red ribbon, how we are all the same. The scenes where they are touching and standing close show unity, hope, togetherness, and oneness.

What role do you think music plays in promoting unity and understanding in today’s world?

I believe music plays a huge role in helping to spread that message of unity and understanding in today’s world.  Music is the universal language that travels beyond borders, languages, religions, and nationalities. It’s the sound and soul of us enjoying this magical existence together!

How do you hope fans will engage with “One Love One World (We Are One)” on a more introspective level?

This video has already resonated with thousands of people. Just reading the wonderful comments that people have left under the release on YouTube, they seem to be getting the positive message and are helping to affect change in the world.  I, and many others, believe that the world needs a huge unifying song right now. We as a human race are ready for a positive shift in our universal consciousness towards kindness, compassion, acceptance, and love.

Can you talk about any challenges you faced while creating “One Love One World (We Are One)” and how you overcame them?

The major challenge was the pandemic and could we find the visuals to really convey the feeling of the new song arrangement? I believe that we did! The video has won and continues to win Best Video awards and has been featured and selected in several international film festivals.

Do you have any upcoming projects you are excited about?

I released my dance single “My Intuition” in April and in July I released my fun dance cover of Rick James’ “Give It To Me Baby” which I am hoping will be a breakout song this summer!  It would be great to hear in a film soundtrack!  You are going to hear more fun, upbeat dance music from this guy, be sure of it!
