ABOUT ANGIE STONE
A singer, MC, self-taught keyboardist, and prolific songwriter, Angie Stone’s first claim to fame was her membership in the Sequence, a pioneering hip-hop trio who arrived with “Funk You Up” (1979), the second release on Sugar Hill Records and the first rap single by an all-female group. Following a brief period with the post-new jack swing R&B act Vertical Hold, Stone began a fruitful and lasting solo career as one of neo-soul’s leading lights, known for providing sharp insight into romantic relationships with her smoky yet upfront voice. She established her solo career with a pair of gold-certified albums, Black Diamond (1999) and Mahogany Soul (2001), and added to her accolades with Grammy nominations in the R&B field for “More Than a Woman” (2002), “U-Haul” (2004), and “Baby” (2007). Increasingly occupied with acting roles, she has continued to record every few years, exemplified by deeply soul-rooted LPs such as Rich Girl (2012), Dream (2015), and Full Circle (2019). In 2023, Angie released her 10th and final studio project, “Love Language,” under her new label partnership with the SRG-ILS Group.

Stone, a native of Columbia, South Carolina, began singing gospel music at a young age at First Nazareth Baptist Church. Her father, a member of a local gospel quartet, would take his only child to see performances by gospel artists such as the Singing Angels and the Gospel Keynotes. During her youth, she wrote poetry, played sports, and, after high-school graduation, was offered college basketball scholarships. While working dead-end jobs, Stone began saving money to record her own demos at a local studio called PAW. She joined Gwendolyn Chisholm and Cheryl Cook in the rap trio the Sequence, who recorded hits for Joe and Sylvia Robinson’s Sugar Hill label. These included “Funk You Up,” a remake of Parliament’s hit “Tear the Roof Off the Sucker” called “Funky Sound (Tear the Roof Off),” and “I Don’t Need Your Love.” Soon after, Stone worked with futuristic rap group Mantronix and rocker Lenny Kravitz, and formed the sophisticated R&B trio Vertical Hold, who in 1993 hit the R&B Top 40 with “Seems You’re Much Too Busy.” The group split after its second album.
Stone subsequently signed to Arista as a solo artist and recorded 1999’s Black Diamond, a Top Ten R&B album that was certified gold on the strength of the singles “No More Rain (In This Cloud)” and “Everyday” (one of several songs she has written either for or with D’Angelo). The album won her a pair of Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. She shifted to J for 2001’s Mahogany Soul, another gold seller. That album’s “More Than a Woman,” a duet with Calvin Richardson, earned a Grammy nomination in the category of Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Stone Love, released in 2004, fared just as well commercially with “U-Haul,” another Grammy-nominated performance, among the highlights. Stone smoothly moved to the revitalized Stax label for her fourth studio album, 2007’s The Art of Love & War. It topped the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and featured two of her best singles, “Sometimes” and the Betty Wright collaboration “Baby” — the latter of which made Stone a three-time Grammy nominee.

Throughout the next several years, the singer’s studio output remained consistent in terms of chart performance, despite a series of label changes and frequent acting work. (By the end of the 2000s, Stone had appeared in several movies, including The Fighting Temptations, Pastor Brown, and Scary Movie 5, as well as the television programs Moesha, Girlfriends, and Lincoln Heights.) Unexpected, released on Stax in 2009, hit the Top 20 of the R&B chart. Saguaro Road issued Rich Girl, Stone’s most stylistically diverse set, three years later, and it peaked slightly higher. For Dream, released in 2015, she joined the veteran-loaded Shanachie roster. The next year, the Goldenlane label issued Covered in Soul, for which Stone updated classics popularized by the Guess Who, the Five Stairsteps, and Carole King. Stone changed labels again for the 2019 set Full Circle, featuring the Jaheim duet “Gonna Have to Be You.”

In recent years, you may have noted how Asian pop culture has been on a major global rise. This can be attributed to the lack of geographical borders found in the digital space, allowing easy access to everything from anime and manga to music and fashion. And these trends have even impacted seemingly unrelated industries, with a great example coming from the world of online casinos.

Nowadays, if you scroll through the available online slot games, you’ll find plenty of options that follow Asian-inspired themes like Lucky Rabbit Fortunes and Floating Dragons. As they say, music is a universal language that everyone speaks, and this diverse group acts as a great role model for the otherwise mainly homogenous industry. They reflect that regardless of where you’re from, you can still succeed as a group.

Apart from their viral hit, they have plenty of other unique songs with fun dance beats and catchy lines that will linger with you, even if you don’t speak Japanese. One such song is Love Fire, which features a softer background tune, and Temperature, from the same album as Just Like Dat, which has heavier beats.

A Dance Performance That Challenges Perception

Multidisciplinary artist Will Rawls is set to debut his latest project, [siccer], in collaboration with the Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater (REDCAT) and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA). Running from April 10–12, this live performance is part of Rawls’ broader exhibition at ICA LA, which runs from April 5–August 31.

Through movement, stop-motion film techniques, and a layered examination of Black representation in media, [siccer] presents a striking commentary on surveillance, language, and identity.

Blurring Boundaries Between Dance and Film

At the heart of [siccer] is Rawls’ interest in how Black bodies are documented and interpreted. The performance draws from stop-motion animation—where individual photographs create the illusion of movement—but disrupts the process. As performers Holland Andrews, keyon gaskin,  jess pretty, Katrina Reid, and Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste recreate scenes from an iconic American film, they use the pauses between frames as moments of resistance, playing with visibility and erasure.

Even the project’s title, “[siccer]”, nods to language and perception. “[Sic]” is often used to flag non-standard English in a quote, subtly reinforcing linguistic hierarchies. Rawls flips this idea to challenge how Black expression is corrected, filtered, and framed.

Will Rawls: An Artist Redefining Performance

Rawls, whose work spans choreography, video, sculpture, and installation, has built a career exploring the intersections of dance and identity. A recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Herb Alpert Award, he has been featured at MCA Chicago, the 35th Bienal de São Paulo, and the Museum of Modern Art, among others. His writing has appeared in the Hammer Museum and Museu de Arte de São Paulo publications. He is an Associate Professor of Choreography at UCLA’s Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance.

Red Bull Batalla Kicks Off New Season

Red Bull Batalla officially launched the application process for the 2025-2026 season, inviting MCs from around the world to showcase their freestyle skills. From now until April 1, aspiring competitors could submit their freestyle videos via the Batalla app for a chance to advance toward the prestigious Red Bull Batalla World Final.

Last season, more than 8,000 MCs applied globally. This year, hopefuls had the opportunity to prepare their best freestyles and submit their entries through the official Batalla app on the Apple Store and Google Play Store. A panel of judges from the Spanish-speaking music scene reviews each submission, selecting the most talented lyricists to move forward.

U.S. Competitors Enter the Freestyle Battle

For MCs in the United States, advancing past the initial application phase means competing in bracket-style, one-on-one freestyle battles in Miami and Chicago for the first time. The journey culminates in the highly anticipated U.S. National Final in New York City, the birthplace of Hip Hop.

The reigning U.S. National Champion, AdonysX of Miami, won the title in 2024 and could return to defend it. The next champion will earn a place at the 2026 World Final.

World Final Returns to Chile

National Champions from more than 18 Spanish-speaking countries will gather in Chile for the 2026 World Final. The event marks four years since Chile last hosted the championship, where legendary MC Aczino secured his second World Champion belt.

Celebrating 20 Years of Freestyle Battles

The competition will mark its 20th anniversary with a landmark event, Red Bull Batalla: Nueva Historia, set for November 29 in Argentina. The special showcase will bring together legendary MCs and rising talent to celebrate two decades of freestyle rap.

A Soundtrack for Embracing Love Without Fear

“Natural represents so many life experiences and showcases so much growth,” Zay’Marie tells us. “It’s about embracing vulnerability and every emotion without hesitation—whether it’s the risks that come with joy or passion. I wanted this project to sound like freedom—the freedom to feel deeply, to take up space, and to love without apology.”

The EP’s lead single, Natural, embodies this energy perfectly. With smooth, soulful production and heartfelt lyrics, it feels like an anthem for anyone ready to let go of fear and embrace love fully. “I used to overthink everything, but with this song, I just let it flow naturally (no pun intended!),” she laughs. “It’s about allowing yourself to experience love fully, without second-guessing or holding back. As the Practice Area Leader for Arts & Culture at Gensler Los Angeles, Sherrod has worked on transformative projects that prioritize representation, accessibility, and cultural storytelling.

“The future of architecture is being shaped by women and people of color who bring a deeper sense of purpose to design,” Sherrod shared with The Hype Magazine. “These are the voices reimagining how our spaces reflect history, culture, and community.”

His work at Gensler includes the award-winning Debbie Allen Dance Academy, which provides a world-class space for young Black dancers and artists, and Compton College student housing, offering affordable, first-of-its-kind campus housing solutions for community college students in Southern California. He also led the design for Gallery 90220, South LA’s first Black- and Brown-owned contemporary art gallery.

Sherrod’s impact goes beyond traditional architecture, as seen in his recent collaboration with The We The People Museum, the first virtual BIPOC drone & history museum. Set against the backdrop of Market Street in San Diego, the museum integrates cutting-edge technology with cultural preservation, showcasing global stories from Accra to Portugal. A key initiative of this project is The DRONe Project, a STEAM-focused program that trains BIPOC girls and young adults in drone piloting and digital content creation.

“We’re not just preserving history—we’re empowering young women, especially those from marginalized communities, to become the future of technology and design,” Sherrod explains.

Beyond his architectural achievements, Sherrod is also a USC lecturer, a mentor, and a Forbes Culture Champion, using his platform to uplift the next generation of designers, innovators, and cultural leaders.

Top-Tier Talent Behind the Scenes

The Lanterns pilot is co-written by Mundy, “Watchmen’s” Damon Lindelof, and DC Comics writer Tom King. James Hawes (Slow Horses) directs the first two episodes, with Stephen Williams (Westworld), Geeta Vasant Patel (House of the Dragon), and Alik Sakharov (Game of Thrones) also attached to direct.

With James Gunn and Peter Safran leading DC Studios, “Lanterns” is sure to be a major entry in the new era of DC storytelling. Fans, like me,  expect a series that honors its comic book roots while delivering a fresh, cinematic experience…stay tuned!

SAG Awards® winners and guests gathered at the PEOPLE and Audi Post-Gala at the Shrine Auditorium to celebrate the night’s achievements and philanthropy.

A Star-Studded Night of Celebration

Following the 31st Annual SAG Awards® on Sunday, February 23, Dotdash Meredith’s PEOPLE and Audi hosted the official post-awards gala at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall. The exclusive event honored the evening’s top winners and highlighted the philanthropic work of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation.

Notable Guests and Award Winners

The event welcomed a distinguished list of actors, including Adam Brody, Leighton Meester, Jodie Foster, Joey King, Taylor Zakhar Perez, Jackie Tohn, Adrien Brody, Edward Norton, Quinta Brunson, Jeremy Allen White, Pamela Anderson, and Keri Russell. Among the night’s winners in attendance were Timothée Chalamet, Molly Shannon, Demi Moore, and Kieran Culkin, who stopped by the SAG Awards Engraving Station, presented by City National Bank, to personalize their statuettes.

Cast members from Bridgerton, Anora, Shōgun, Baby Reindeer, Abbott Elementary, and “Best Cast in a Motion Picture” winner Conclave were also seen at the event, many of whom posed for portraits in the Shutterstock studio.

An Elegant and Immersive Atmosphere

For the 15th consecutive year, Tony Schubert of Event Eleven transformed the Shrine Auditorium stage into a refined setting with dark wood trumpet columns, rust-colored drapery, and a blend of off-white, teal, and blue furnishings. The design created a balance of warmth and sophistication, elevating the post-gala ambiance.

Culinary and Cocktail Experience

Guests enjoyed a curated menu by renowned chef David Chang, founder of Momofuku, featuring bing bread with ricotta and chili crunch and his signature fried chicken. The beverages included Purely Sedona Water, Cooper’s Hawk Wine, and Santa Monica Brew Works beer. Specialty cocktails featured Redbreast 12-Year-Old Irish Whiskey, Código 1530 Tequila, and Absolut Vodka, alongside a selection of Pernod Ricard USA spirits, including Malfy Gin, Malibu Original, Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, and Jefferson’s Bourbon.

Music and Entertainment

Internationally acclaimed DJ Michelle Pesce provided the evening’s soundtrack, keeping the celebration lively as attendees toasted the industry’s achievements.

The PEOPLE and Audi Post-Gala once again delivered an unforgettable evening, blending Hollywood glamour with a commitment to charitable initiatives.

In an exclusive clip from the upcoming episode of OWN’s Ready to Love, cast member Cam opens up about his struggles with mental health. This powerful moment highlights the growing importance of discussing mental health among men, particularly Black men, who often face societal pressures to keep their emotions and challenges hidden.

As Cam speaks candidly with his fellow cast members, the clip offers a rare glimpse into the internal conflicts many men experience as they navigate emotional and mental obstacles in different life stages. The episode sheds some light on the struggles faced by men as they move through what could be described as the three stages of life: the thinker, the Knower, and the Doer.

Mental health discussions, especially among men, have long been marginalized or ignored. The Ready to Love platform provides an important space to normalize these conversations, showcasing the vulnerability and strength of men willing to acknowledge that they don’t always have the answers to life’s complex emotional and mental challenges. Summit to Highlight New Record Label, Live Performances, Workshops

The Los Angeles College of Music (LACM) will host its first-ever Music Industry Summit from February 28 to March 1, 2025. The summit will feature the official launch of 370 Music Group, a non-profit, non-exclusive record label and music licensing company. This new initiative supports LACM students and alumni by providing a platform to showcase their work and collaborate with industry professionals.

370 Music Group Launches with Diverse Artist Roster

370 Music Group, a key component of the LACM Foundation, is designed to provide students and alumni with professional development and exposure in the music industry. The label offers an immersive platform for collaboration between emerging artists and industry veterans. Led by the LACM Faculty Advisory Board, the label provides comprehensive support for its roster, which includes both current students and alumni.

The board consists of industry experts such as Erin Workman, Adam LaRue, Jennifer Smith, Karla Ortiz, and Michael Chrysanthou, each bringing years of experience across multiple music business sectors.

Adjenai Worrell, 370 Music Group’s Label Manager, emphasized the importance of fostering talent through mentorship and industry connections. “Our team brings a rich cultural diversity and a broad range of professional experience to the table,” said Adjenai Worrell, 370 Music Group Label Manager. “By combining our strengths, we aim to empower our artists, helping them develop their vision and connect with communities worldwide,” Worrell said.

Music Industry Summit Programming:

The summit will open with a reception on February 28, followed by live performances from LACM artists, including Lendryx, Ivy Sang, and Olivia Rose. On March 1, the summit will offer a series of workshops and panels focusing on various aspects of the music industry, such as songwriting, publishing, publicity, and sync licensing. Industry partners like West Coast Songwriters, Ableton, AiAiAi, and DISCO will lead workshops. Performances by LACM students will frame the day’s events.

Both events are free to the public, with a suggested $25 donation benefiting the LACM Foundation, which offers scholarships and financial assistance to aspiring musicians.

At the heart of the celebration were two dynamic panel discussions, moderated by Emmy Award-winning journalist Melvin Robert, highlighting Black creatives’ brilliance and influence in television and film.

The first panel, focusing on Black storytelling, featured a powerhouse lineup of talent, including Ashley Nicole Black (Shrinking), Nkechi Okoro Carroll (Found, All American), and Damian Marcano (The Pitt, Emperor of Ocean Park). Their discussion explored the importance of authentic representation, the challenges of breaking barriers in the industry, and the future of Black narratives in Hollywood.

The second panel shifted the focus to the impact of Black actors and actresses, with notable guests including Omar J. Dorsey (Bookie), Shanola Hampton (Found), Luke Tennie (Shrinking), and Jessica Williams (Shrinking). The conversation shed light on the power of visibility, the evolution of Black roles in Hollywood, and the responsibility of actors in shaping cultural narratives.

The event’s highlight came when EGOT-winning superstar Jennifer Hudson took center stage for an intimate fireside chat with Black Excellence Brunch founder, Trell Thomas. Before taking her seat, Hudson was greeted with a surprise “Spirit Tunnel”—a heartfelt tribute from her producers, replicating a signature moment from The Jennifer Hudson Show. The emotional welcome set the tone for a deeply inspiring discussion about her journey, the significance of Black representation in media, and her continued mission to elevate Black voices in entertainment.

Beyond the discussions, the event truly celebrated culture and creativity, reaffirming the importance of Black voices in shaping the entertainment industry. With Warner Bros. Television Group and Black Excellence Brunch leading the charge, the gathering was more than just a moment—it was a movement, a statement, and a testament to Black storytellers’ brilliance, resilience, and legacy.

As Black History Month continues, this event reminds us of the power of storytelling and the entertainment industry’s responsibility to uplift diverse voices. With conversations like these, the future of Black excellence in Hollywood looks brighter than ever.
