A Dance Performance That Challenges Perception

Will Rawls [siccer] stage performance – Photo by Jared Sorells.

Multidisciplinary artist Will Rawls is set to debut his latest project, [siccer], in collaboration with the Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater (REDCAT) and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA). Running from April 10–12, this live performance is part of Rawls’ broader exhibition at ICA LA, which runs from April 5–August 31.

Through movement, stop-motion film techniques, and a layered examination of Black representation in media, [siccer] presents a striking commentary on surveillance, language, and identity.

Blurring Boundaries Between Dance and Film

At the heart of [siccer] is Rawls’ interest in how Black bodies are documented and interpreted. The performance draws from stop-motion animation—where individual photographs create the illusion of movement—but disrupts the process. As performers Holland Andrews, keyon gaskin,  jess pretty, Katrina Reid, and Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste recreate scenes from an iconic American film, they use the pauses between frames as moments of resistance, playing with visibility and erasure.

Even the project’s title, “[siccer]”, nods to language and perception. “[Sic]” is often used to flag non-standard English in a quote, subtly reinforcing linguistic hierarchies. Rawls flips this idea to challenge how Black expression is corrected, filtered, and framed.

Will Rawls: An Artist Redefining Performance

Rawls, whose work spans choreography, video, sculpture, and installation, has built a career exploring the intersections of dance and identity. A recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Herb Alpert Award, he has been featured at MCA Chicago, the 35th Bienal de São Paulo, and the Museum of Modern Art, among others. His writing has appeared in the Hammer Museum and Museu de Arte de São Paulo publications. He is an Associate Professor of Choreography at UCLA’s Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance.

How to Experience [siccer]

Performances run at 8:30 PM from April 10–12, 2025, at REDCAT in downtown Los Angeles. Tickets are available now:

  • General Admission: $27
  • Students & REDCAT Members: $22
  • CalArts Students, Faculty & Staff: $14

The global freestyle rap competition returns with new opportunities.

Red Bull Batalla launched the 2025-2026 season, inviting MCs worldwide to compete for a spot at the World Final in Chile.

Red Bull Batalla Kicks Off New Season

Red Bull Batalla officially launched the application process for the 2025-2026 season, inviting MCs from around the world to showcase their freestyle skills. From now until April 1, aspiring competitors could submit their freestyle videos via the Batalla app for a chance to advance toward the prestigious Red Bull Batalla World Final.

Last season, more than 8,000 MCs applied globally. This year, hopefuls had the opportunity to prepare their best freestyles and submit their entries through the official Batalla app on the Apple Store and Google Play Store. A panel of judges from the Spanish-speaking music scene reviews each submission, selecting the most talented lyricists to move forward.

U.S. Competitors Enter the Freestyle Battle

Red Bull Batalla Application USA Announcement poster

For MCs in the United States, advancing past the initial application phase means competing in bracket-style, one-on-one freestyle battles in Miami and Chicago for the first time. The journey culminates in the highly anticipated U.S. National Final in New York City, the birthplace of Hip Hop.

The reigning U.S. National Champion, AdonysX of Miami, won the title in 2024 and could return to defend it. The next champion will earn a place at the 2026 World Final.

World Final Returns to Chile

National Champions from more than 18 Spanish-speaking countries will gather in Chile for the 2026 World Final. The event marks four years since Chile last hosted the championship, where legendary MC Aczino secured his second World Champion belt.

Celebrating 20 Years of Freestyle Battles

The competition will mark its 20th anniversary with a landmark event, Red Bull Batalla: Nueva Historia, set for November 29 in Argentina. The special showcase will bring together legendary MCs and rising talent to celebrate two decades of freestyle rap.

For more details on the season, visit the official event website. You can also relive highlights from the 2024 season on their YouTube channel.

About Red Bull Batalla

Since 2005, Batalla has provided a global stage for top Spanish-speaking freestyle MCs to compete, evolve, and connect. Now the world’s largest international freestyle battle competition, the event bridges Latin America and Spain, blending Hip Hop influences with the improvisational artistry of traditional folk troubadours.

As Women’s History Month celebrates the achievements of trailblazing women across industries, Kevin Sherrod is a global expert making sure that architecture and design are no exception. A national thought leader and cultural strategist, Sherrod is a driving force behind projects that amplify Black and Brown creatives, particularly women in architecture, and underrepresented communities in STEAM.

On March 3, 2025, he will lead a powerful conversation at UCLA’s Perloff Hall Decafé titled Cognitive Dissonance, examining how Black, Women-led projects are shaping the future of architecture. As the Practice Area Leader for Arts & Culture at Gensler Los Angeles, Sherrod has worked on transformative projects that prioritize representation, accessibility, and cultural storytelling.

“The future of architecture is being shaped by women and people of color who bring a deeper sense of purpose to design,” Sherrod shared with The Hype Magazine. “These are the voices reimagining how our spaces reflect history, culture, and community.”

His work at Gensler includes the award-winning Debbie Allen Dance Academy, which provides a world-class space for young Black dancers and artists, and Compton College student housing, offering affordable, first-of-its-kind campus housing solutions for community college students in Southern California. He also led the design for Gallery 90220, South LA’s first Black- and Brown-owned contemporary art gallery.

Sherrod’s impact goes beyond traditional architecture, as seen in his recent collaboration with The We The People Museum, the first virtual BIPOC drone & history museum. Set against the backdrop of Market Street in San Diego, the museum integrates cutting-edge technology with cultural preservation, showcasing global stories from Accra to Portugal. A key initiative of this project is The DRONe Project, a STEAM-focused program that trains BIPOC girls and young adults in drone piloting and digital content creation.

“We’re not just preserving history—we’re empowering young women, especially those from marginalized communities, to become the future of technology and design,” Sherrod explains.

Beyond his architectural achievements, Sherrod is also a USC lecturer, a mentor, and a Forbes Culture Champion, using his platform to uplift the next generation of designers, innovators, and cultural leaders.

His UCLA lecture isn’t just a discussion—it’s a national call to action to ensure that architecture and technology continue to be inclusive, empowering, and community-driven. If you’re in Los Angeles, be sure to check it out!

In a powerful tribute to Black excellence in entertainment, Warner Bros. Television Group, in partnership with Black Excellence Brunch, hosted an unforgettable Black History Month celebration on Friday, February 21 at the prestigious Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles. The event brought together an elite gathering of industry leaders, actors, and creatives for a day dedicated to the power of Black storytelling and the undeniable impact of Black talent in Hollywood.

At the heart of the celebration were two dynamic panel discussions, moderated by Emmy Award-winning journalist Melvin Robert, highlighting Black creatives’ brilliance and influence in television and film.

The first panel, focusing on Black storytelling, featured a powerhouse lineup of talent, including Ashley Nicole Black (Shrinking), Nkechi Okoro Carroll (Found, All American), and Damian Marcano (The Pitt, Emperor of Ocean Park). Their discussion explored the importance of authentic representation, the challenges of breaking barriers in the industry, and the future of Black narratives in Hollywood.

The second panel shifted the focus to the impact of Black actors and actresses, with notable guests including Omar J. Dorsey (Bookie), Shanola Hampton (Found), Luke Tennie (Shrinking), and Jessica Williams (Shrinking). The conversation shed light on the power of visibility, the evolution of Black roles in Hollywood, and the responsibility of actors in shaping cultural narratives.

The event’s highlight came when EGOT-winning superstar Jennifer Hudson took center stage for an intimate fireside chat with Black Excellence Brunch founder, Trell Thomas. Before taking her seat, Hudson was greeted with a surprise “Spirit Tunnel”—a heartfelt tribute from her producers, replicating a signature moment from The Jennifer Hudson Show. The emotional welcome set the tone for a deeply inspiring discussion about her journey, the significance of Black representation in media, and her continued mission to elevate Black voices in entertainment.

Beyond the discussions, the event truly celebrated culture and creativity, reaffirming the importance of Black voices in shaping the entertainment industry. With Warner Bros. Television Group and Black Excellence Brunch leading the charge, the gathering was more than just a moment—it was a movement, a statement, and a testament to Black storytellers’ brilliance, resilience, and legacy.

As Black History Month continues, this event reminds us of the power of storytelling and the entertainment industry’s responsibility to uplift diverse voices. With conversations like these, the future of Black excellence in Hollywood looks brighter than ever.

Somewhere Fest & Conference - Wichita, Kansas - promo poster

Back and bigger than ever, Somewhere Festival & Conference is set to take over Downtown Wichita from June 13-14, bringing an electrifying mix of music, art, and community impact. Formerly known as Elsewhere Festival, the event has evolved into a powerhouse of genre-defying performances, cutting-edge music tech, and social activism, further cementing Wichita’s growing status as a cultural hub.

This year’s stacked lineup features headliners Deadmau5, Suki Waterhouse, BigXthaPlug, and Flying Lotus, alongside an eclectic mix of artists spanning Hip Hop, electronic, rock, and experimental sounds. Fans can expect sets from Kim Gordon, Aloe Blacc with 2ŁØT, Cassian, Tinlicker Live, Jerro, Die Spitz, Tommy Newport, Elise Trouw, La Luz, Chris Luno, and more.

“When we launched this festival, it was about creating a space for artists and music workers who weren’t finding the support they needed in traditional industry spaces,” said Chase Koch, founder of Movement Musick. “With Somewhere Fest, we’re proving that Wichita isn’t ‘elsewhere’ when it comes to music and culture—it’s Somewhere. A place where artists and audiences can connect, collaborate, and create something truly meaningful.”

Beyond the Music: Tech, Art, and Social Change

Somewhere Festival goes beyond live music, offering AI-driven music experiences, immersive art installations, and hands-on workshops curated by Harvester Arts. A free concert stage ensures accessibility for the entire community, while interactive activations focus on mental health, education, and artist advocacy.

“Somewhere Festival is about using music as a platform for creativity, exploration, and positive change,” said Jessie Hartke, CEO and Director of Midtopia. “Last year proved that this vision resonates, and this year we’re going even bigger—offering more opportunities for connection, artistic discovery, and real impact in Wichita.”

Attendees can engage with local and national organizations addressing addiction recovery, economic mobility, and free speech, earning exclusive festival swag by taking social action.

Industry Insights and Culinary Adventures

Complementing the performances, Somewhere Conference offers industry panels and workshops, including a fireside chat with Aloe Blacc on artistry, activism, and navigating the music industry.

Food lovers can explore a curated lineup of vendors, plus unique experiences like the Blind Taste Challenge and Foodie Photo Op Challenge, which add an interactive twist to the festival’s culinary offerings.

Wichita’s Must-Attend Festival Experience

More than just a festival, Somewhere Festival is a powerful mobilization bringing artists, fans, and changemakers together to create something meaningful. Whether discovering a new favorite artist, engaging in thought-provoking conversations, or exploring immersive installations, attendees will see firsthand why Wichita is fast becoming a destination for live music and creative innovation.

Some conversations deserve to be treated as happenings, and in my professional opinion, the following is one of them. Musical theater is perhaps not on most minds of music news consumers as some career paths in entertainment are hidden away and obscured by the detritus of dealing and working in an industry that, behind closed doors, would rather deal in the “sensational” and “emotional”…never mind because if you’re reading this, you’re part of the choir so to speak. Anyway, Alicia Keys and Lily Ling, Music Director of Hell’s Kitchen, are connecting via Zoom on Thursday, February 27th, and it’s open and free to the public with RSVP.
Full official announcement below!!!

In the heart of California lies a city that ought to be a beacon of progress, a vibrant tapestry of cultures woven together under the sun-soaked skies of Oakland. Yet, beneath this façade of diversity and hope lies a cesspool of corruption, cronyism, and systemic discrimination that threatens to undermine the very foundations of justice and equality. Welcome to “Payoff Paradise,” where the political elite play a dangerous game, and the marginalized bear the brunt of their machinations.

The Corruption of Shang Thao

At the center of this sordid tale is Mayor Shang Thao, a figure who has risen to power amidst whispers of conspiracy and unethical practices. Thao, alongside her romantic partner Andre Jones and the notorious Duong family, stands accused of orchestrating a plot to manipulate the outcome of the 2022 mayoral election. In a city where connections often dictate outcomes, the Duong family’s desire for lucrative city contracts for housing and waste management was seemingly met with open arms.

Thao’s rise was not without its controversies. Once an intern in the office of Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan, she quickly ascended to power, leveraging relationships that seem more transactional than transformational. With most government officials in Oakland hailing from elsewhere, the disconnect between leadership and the community is palpable. It’s a recipe for exploitation, where the needs of the many are sacrificed at the altar of political gain.

### The $25,000 Shakedown

Now let’s pivot to Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price, another player in this grim theater of politics. Price is embroiled in a scandal that would make even the most hardened political observers raise an eyebrow. Allegations have surfaced that she solicited a $25,000 cash donation from political critic Mario Juarez to help her fight a recall effort. Juarez, who has openly criticized Price, found himself facing a felony check fraud charge shortly after refusing her request.

This isn’t just a case of political maneuvering; it reeks of vindictive prosecution. Castillo, Juarez’s attorney, claims that Price’s actions are motivated by a desperate need to maintain her position amid mounting criticism. If this isn’t a classic example of quid pro quo corruption, then what is? Price’s alleged attempts to silence dissenters through intimidation and legal repercussions represent a dangerous precedent for all who dare to challenge the status quo.

AAPI Discrimination in Alameda Courts

But the rot doesn’t stop there. The Alameda County court system has come under fire for its discriminatory practices against AAPI communities, particularly the Samoan population. Allegations have emerged that systemic bias permeates the judicial process, leading to unfair treatment and unequal representation. This is not just an issue of individual prejudice; it’s a reflection of a broader societal failure to acknowledge and address the complexities of cultural identity within the justice system.

If the courts are supposed to be the bedrock of justice, then how can we trust them when they actively exclude voices based on race or ethnicity? The implications are dire: marginalized communities lose faith in a system designed to protect them, and the cycle of injustice continues unabated.

The Exclusion of Black and Jewish Jurors

In a city that prides itself on its diversity, the exclusion of Black and Jewish jurors from the jury pool is particularly alarming. Historical patterns of discrimination have a way of echoing through time, manifesting in modern practices that disproportionately affect these communities. When juries lack representation, the very essence of justice is compromised.

As we reflect on these issues, it’s crucial to remember that the struggle for representation is not just a matter of numbers; it’s about ensuring that the voices of the marginalized are heard and valued. The failure to include diverse perspectives in the jury process only perpetuates the systemic inequalities that plague our society.

A Special Election and a Police Force in Crisis

In a shocking turn of events, both Mayor Thao and DA Price faced recall in a special election, a clear indication that the public is growing weary of the corruption and incompetence that has marred their administrations. The people of Alameda County are demanding accountability, but the question remains: will the system allow for genuine change, or will it continue to protect its own?

Compounding these issues is the fact that the Oakland Police Department is currently under federal oversight for corruption and brutality. The city has become a cautionary tale, a stark reminder of how power can corrupt, and how those sworn to protect can become instruments of oppression. The community is left to grapple with the reality that their safety is compromised by the very institutions designed to uphold it.

Targeting Sabian Carabello

Adding another layer to this intricate web of corruption is the case of Sabian Carabello, the CEO of Bliss Mushrooms and President of Ritual Church. Carabello, a community leader, found himself targeted by the authorities after speaking out against the corrupt practices within the Oakland Police Department. His detention on dubious charges is a chilling reminder of how dissent is often met with punitive measures, especially when it threatens the established order.

The contrast in treatment between individuals like Carabello, who dares to speak truth to power, and those in positions of privilege is stark. When a white man declares, “Give me liberty or give me death,” he is often celebrated as a hero. When a Black man echoes the same sentiment, he is branded a criminal. This double standard reveals a deep-seated bias that continues to plague our society, perpetuating a cycle of injustice that targets those who dare to challenge the status quo.

The Historical Context of Racism

Historically, the white power structure has made examples of Black men in positions of influence, tarnishing their reputations to maintain control and perpetuate white supremacy. This pattern of vilification is not merely a relic of the past; it persists today in the form of systemic discrimination and targeted campaigns against those who dare to rise above their station.

The narrative surrounding Black men who speak out against corruption is often twisted, painted with the brush of criminality and threat. This is not only a tragedy for the individuals involved but a profound injustice that reverberates throughout the community. When those in power utilize their influence to discredit and silence dissent, they not only undermine the principles of justice but also stifle the voices of those who seek change.

A Call to Action

As we navigate this treacherous landscape, it is imperative that we remain vigilant. The events unfolding in Oakland serve as a clarion call for all citizens to demand transparency, accountability, and justice. We must challenge the status quo and refuse to accept a system that perpetuates inequality and corruption.

It is time to hold our leaders accountable and to ensure that the voices of the marginalized are not only heard but amplified. The fight for justice is not an isolated struggle; it is a collective endeavor that requires the participation of all who believe in the principles of equity, fairness, and integrity

Conclusion

The underbelly of Alameda County is rife with corruption, discrimination, and systemic injustice. The stories of individuals like Shang Thao, Pamela Price, and Sabian Carabello reveal a troubling pattern that demands our attention and action. As we confront these challenges, let us remember that the true measure of a society lies in how it treats its most vulnerable members. Together, we can shine a light on the darkness and work towards a future where justice is not just a lofty ideal, but a lived reality for all.

Everybody wants to be viral on the internet or have some level of importance. I experienced this for myself during the biggest sports event of the year: Super Bowl Weekend. From February 6th to 9th, 2025, I had the pleasure of heading to New Orleans for the big game weekend for the first time. I covered events with my friends Fago, Founder of the media agency Newssitched Media, and Kris, who reported on new stitched media. We started with the St Jude Charity Event and worked our way around.

I also met a guy named Israel, founder of Opulence Group, which was the trigger pull for this epic night. Larry Morrow/Larry Morrow Hospitality conducted a series of events throughout Super Bowl weekend, with special guests like Wallo and Gillie from Million Dollars Worth Of Game Podcast, Glorilla, Latto, Travis Scott, Meek Mill, Cardi B, and so many more, along with some surprise guests.

TGD Goes Viral - Super Bowl Weekend 2025 - event poster

Saturday, February 8, is when it all changed. Internet Streaming Sensations Kai Cenat, IShowSpeed, and comedian Druski were all in the building, amongst plenty; Kai and Speed hosted a celebrity flag football game with the NFL that evening. I didn’t get credentialed for that event, so I’d hoped they would show up through the night because I wanted to get content from them before I left. I last captured Kai at Druski’s “Coulda Fest” in Atlanta, GA.

As the night went on, I saw bottle girls on the top floor; I tried to be very observant of what was going on and what shots needed to be taken. I looked up and realized Kai And Speed were up there, and my brain had a different switch on it. More guests such as Desi Banks, MrRuggs, Paul Pierce, Meek Mil, Simba, Kenny Burns, and so many other celebrity faces showed up on these nights, I realized it’s game time and it was a now or never moment.

Kai, Speed, and Travis Were secured for a little while before making it to the stage. Before 1 AM, Club Empire was completely packed. But I didn’t get discouraged, I kept the faith of a good content outcome. But making my way to the stage was my saving grace for air and my saving grace for key shots. I stayed there and pushed toward Travis, Kai, and Speed. In these situations, you must get comfortable being uncomfortable, especially in a big or crowded room. The moment started when I realized Travis was about to head to the front of the stage to perform/host.

He vibed out for a while, and as time went on, he performed Fein, which became viral on the internet. I switched from picture to video because I felt pictures wouldn’t do this justice. So, I turned my camera vertically and just got in the moment. Capturing that and Speed and Kai having a great time, I knew video of these timeless moments could speak louder than pictures. Sometimes, you just know what’s going to hit harder.

Full Video of the moment is here: Tyra Grayson | #TGDSHOTIT 📸- @travisscott performs #FEIN with @kaicenat & @ishowspeed at @empireorleans , a @larry_morrow party, a once in a lifetime… | Instagram

Standing next to these people makes you feel some sense of power as a photographer. After so much hard work and you luckily end up in rooms like that, it makes what I do worth it. Anybody can do this if you try. You have to prove yourself to others and take those chances

Israel of Opulence and Larry Morrow very much liked the content and kept inviting me back for all the nights he and Larry had during the time I was there. I developed a relationship with staff and security, making each night easier and more comfortable. We got the announcement Friday night that Travis was coming Saturday night. So, I knew then that my life would do some type of 360, and it did.

I posted that video around 10 AM to noon, not knowing the type of influence it was going to have. It was seen by many blogs worldwide, and my logo was cut in some, which is common for viral videos. I didn’t know what I was hopping into, but now I understand! It’s all over YouTube and TikTok; the weekend alone generated so many views on my page. The moral of the story is to never give up. Never count yourself out. Your moment is well on its way and might come faster than you think. Entertainment is a harsh industry, especially for content creators, but you have to be willing to prove yourself and make those sacrifices. Comedian Desi Banks and I also had a conversation, and I told him I traveled 5 hours for all this, and he replied with, “Oh, that’s not bad; it’s a sacrifice, baby,” and ended it with a hug, which is very true. Being a content creator comes with so much, but it is so rewarding.

Being viral wasn’t on my 2025 playing card, but I’m here now. The world finally sees TGD in ways I never thought. And I hope your brand does the same. Whether you’re a camera person, designer, director, or whatever field, make those sacrifices because it will pay off in the end, and always POST. In timeless moments like that, time is of the essence and is very important while the hype is still fresh.

As I say, Create Like Your Life Depends On It Because It Does. Thank you to Newsstiched Media, Opulence Group, and Larry Morrow for believing in me and my talents and allowing me to capture a weekend that will always be near and dear to me as a creative. Newsstiched Media was the main reason I was in New Orleans in the first place, and it opened up so many more opportunities. Never sleep on yourself, guys. Seize every moment you have and create those relationships.

The stage is set, the arena is buzzing, and the anticipation is sky-high. On February 4, 2025, Ashwin Gane is set to ignite the crowd at the brand-new Intuit Dome with a dynamic opening performance ahead of the highly anticipated Los Angeles Lakers vs. Clippers showdown. With 18,000 fans packing the state-of-the-art venue, Ashwin will deliver a high-voltage musical spectacle, complete with a crew of 20 electrifying hip-hop dancers, ensuring an unforgettable start to the night’s action.

Performing at a marquee NBA event is a prestigious milestone, with past primetime openers including some of the biggest names in the industry—Drake, J. Cole, Cardi B, and Travis Scott have all set the bar high with electrifying performances during NBA All-Star Weekends and pivotal season matchups. These high-profile showcases fuse sports and music, capturing the energy, passion, and cultural impact of both worlds.

As the latest artist to take on this distinguished role, Ashwin Gane is poised to bring his signature style to the court, merging cinematic soundscapes with urban beats in a way that is uniquely his own. His upcoming performance is more than just entertainment—it’s a moment of artistic evolution, aligning his rising stardom with one of the NBA’s biggest nights.

Ashwin Gane has been making waves in the hip-hop landscape, known for his ability to weave orchestral elements into hard-hitting beats. His distinct sound and creative vision have earned him a growing fanbase, and now, with this high-profile opportunity, he is set to make an indelible mark on the industry. Sharing a stage that has previously featured elite artists like The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, and Megan Thee Stallion, Ashwin’s primetime moment is a testament to his rapid ascent in the music world.

Expect nothing short of a full-throttle performance. Ashwin’s set will feature a meticulously choreographed routine, with his 20-member dance crew amplifying the energy in sync with the pulsating beats of his music. The spectacle will blend high-impact visuals, dynamic stage presence, and an atmosphere that mirrors the intensity of an NBA rivalry. The Intuit Dome’s cutting-edge sound and lighting systems will further elevate the experience, making this an immersive event for fans in attendance and those tuning in from around the world.

Equally important, Ashwin Gane will be joined by the incredible dancers from Hip Hop Dreamz, founded by Destiny Frye. She is a San Diego native and Hip-Hop visionary with 30 years in the dance industry, has been shaping the culture from an early age. With her mother directing the Origin Hip-Hop Cultural Center, Destiny moved to New York at 17 to launch Hip Hop Dreamz, leading performances at Madison Square Garden, Barclays Center, New York Fashion Week, and Times Square. A veteran of primetime NBA performances for over a decade, she is now set to make history by putting Ashwin on the map with his NBA debut at the new $2.1 billion Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, during the LA Lakers vs. Clippers game.

This isn’t just another musical set—it’s a cultural moment that underscores the ever-growing synergy between sports and music. The NBA has long been at the forefront of integrating music into its events, using the power of performance to enhance the fan experience. Ashwin Gane’s opening act symbolizes this fusion, bridging the gap between hip-hop’s evolution and basketball’s global appeal.

With extensive media coverage expected, this game—and Ashwin’s performance—will be one of the night’s defining highlights. As fans gather for a thrilling Lakers vs. Clippers matchup, they will first witness an artist on the cusp of superstardom, delivering a performance that will resonate long after the final buzzer.

Mark your calendars for February 4th—Ashwin Gane is ready to command the stage, set the tone, and deliver a primetime performance worthy of the NBA’s electrifying legacy.

This year, the ABFF Honors will present the coveted Hollywood Legacy Award to the iconic Marla Gibbs and the Rising Star Award to the talented Aaron Pierre. Previously announced honorees include Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Giancarlo Esposito, and Keke Palmer. Actress and comedian Zainab Johnson will host the evening.

This year’s ceremony will also pay tribute to Altadena, a community whose contributions have significantly shaped Black history and culture. From arts and activism to education and business, Altadena’s legacy of resilience and achievement will be highlighted as a source of inspiration for generations to come.

“The community of Altadena embodies what we celebrate at the American Black Film Festival: strength, solidarity, and commitment to excellence,” said the Fridays. “By honoring Altadena’s story, we aim to inspire creativity and foster support for a vibrant cultural future.”
