I’m a huge Statham movie fan, so it’s exciting to share this first look at “A Working Man,” starring Jason Statham, in an intense new clip before the film’s March 28 theatrical release.

First Look: “A Working Man” Brings High-Stakes Action

A Working Man Starring Jason Statham - promo arwork - Amazon MGM Studios

Amazon MGM Studios released the first official clip from “A Working Man“, the upcoming action thriller starring Jason Statham. Directed by David Ayer and co-written by Sylvester Stallone, the film follows Levon Cade, a former black ops operative who trades combat for construction—until a kidnapping pulls him back into a world of violence.

The first-look clip below from Amazon / MGM Studios teases Statham in his element, delivering raw intensity and tactical precision as Cade fights to unravel a sinister human trafficking ring. The action sequences promise a gripping mix of brutal combat and high-stakes drama, staying true to Ayer’s signature gritty style.

Statham Leads a Star-Studded Cast

Joining Statham in A Working Man are Michael Peña, David Harbour, Jason Flemyng, Merab Ninidze, and Noemi Gonzalez. The film is based on Chuck Dixon’s novel “Levon’s Trade” and is backed by powerhouse producers, including Stallone himself.

This screenplay by Stallone and Ayer, brings a relentless, no-holds-barred action experience that fans of John Wick and The Equalizer won’t want to miss. Super shoutout to the fight coordinator

Only in Theaters March 28

HBO’s new DC drama “Lanterns” begins production at Warner Bros. It stars Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler as Green Lanterns investigating a murder.

A New Era for Green Lantern

HBO has officially kicked off production on “Lanterns“, its upcoming DC drama series, at the historic Warner Bros. lot in Burbank. The highly anticipated show, produced in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, brings the legendary Green Lantern mythology to life with a fresh, grounded approach.

A Gritty Mystery with an Intergalactic Twist

The series follows John Stewart, a new recruit, and veteran Lantern Hal Jordan as they take on a dark, earthbound murder case in the heartland of America. As intergalactic law enforcers, their investigation leads them into a larger mystery that could shake the universe.

Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team

With a powerhouse cast led by Aaron Pierre (The Underground Railroad) as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) as Hal Jordan, the series also features Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Ulrich Thomsen in key roles.

Chris Mundy, executive producer and showrunner says,  “From the start, our driving force has been to deliver a layered drama – rooted in nuanced storytelling and rich world building – that balances tension and mystery with honest, authentic emotion. The goal is to create something that feels timeless and grounded without sacrificing the magic of the source material.”

Top-Tier Talent Behind the Scenes

The Lanterns pilot is co-written by Mundy, “Watchmen’s” Damon Lindelof, and DC Comics writer Tom King. James Hawes (Slow Horses) directs the first two episodes, with Stephen Williams (Westworld), Geeta Vasant Patel (House of the Dragon), and Alik Sakharov (Game of Thrones) also attached to direct.

With James Gunn and Peter Safran leading DC Studios, “Lanterns” is sure to be a major entry in the new era of DC storytelling. Fans, like me,  expect a series that honors its comic book roots while delivering a fresh, cinematic experience…stay tuned!

In an exclusive clip from the upcoming episode of OWN’s Ready to Love, cast member Cam opens up about his struggles with mental health. This powerful moment highlights the growing importance of discussing mental health among men, particularly Black men, who often face societal pressures to keep their emotions and challenges hidden.

As Cam speaks candidly with his fellow cast members, the clip offers a rare glimpse into the internal conflicts many men experience as they navigate emotional and mental obstacles in different life stages. The episode sheds some light on the struggles faced by men as they move through what could be described as the three stages of life: the thinker, the Knower, and the Doer.

Mental health discussions, especially among men, have long been marginalized or ignored. The Ready to Love platform provides an important space to normalize these conversations, showcasing the vulnerability and strength of men willing to acknowledge that they don’t always have the answers to life’s complex emotional and mental challenges. By sharing Cam’s story, the show contributes to breaking down the stigma surrounding men’s mental health, encouraging others to open up and seek support.

This exclusive clip, which we’re debuting courtesy of OWN,  before the episode airs this Friday, is a critical step in addressing these issues that men face, particularly within communities where seeking help has often been stigmatized. We’re grateful to OWN for allowing us to debut this important moment, offering viewers a chance to witness a breakthrough in the ongoing conversation about mental wellness.

Watch the Exclusive Clip Now

We encourage viewers to watch the full exclusive clip and witness Cam’s emotional moment on “Ready to Love“, airing every Friday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on OWN. It’s a vital reminder of the importance of speaking out about mental health.

Acting is not for the faint of heart. It often requires patience, dedication, and hard work, but an innate creative passion usually drives those entering this industry.

While perhaps a newer player in the LA film scene, Mario Silva is a technically diverse actor. He uses his theater background and professional experiences to pave his career path.

An Enriching Career in Performing Arts

Since 2014, Silva has worked with Live in Theater, a Drama Desk-nominated theater company, where he worked doing live, immersive theater. Unfortunately, like many industries during the global pandemic, the performing arts industry experienced turbulence.

However, despite such heavy impacts, Silva found himself in a theater position that opened many opportunities for him during this period – when Live in Theater shifted their performances to a virtual environment.

With specific protocols in place, Silva was able to perform in numerous shows in 2020, starring in productions such as Neil Labute’s Shape of Things, Tennessee Williams’s The Glass Menagerie, Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, and a stage adaptation of Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs as Mr. Blonde. These productions took place between September 2020 and December 2020.

After his time on stage in 2020, Silva moved toward individual work, directing himself on stage in Luigi Pirandello’s The Man with the Flower in His Mouth. This proved to be one of the biggest challenges the actor has had to face, mainly because it was his artistic vision of this rendition competing at the Short and Sweet Festival in 2021 in Dubai, which is a globally renowned theater festival that runs for six weeks with more than 115 competitors. Silva’s passion and dedication won over the judges and audience at the festival, taking him to the final round, where he won the Best Actor award for the season. He was invited to join the judging panel for the theater festival the following year.

Heading to Hollywood

In 2024, Silva moved to Los Angeles to explore opportunities on the big screen. Ready to prove his worth, he auditioned for the critically acclaimed theater company Shakespeare by the Sea. While Silva was largely unknown and new in Hollywood, he was cast to star in the company’s summer comedy hit, Cardenio, for which he received the Broadway World Best Performer nomination in 2024.

Silva became greatly interested in the new vertical formats through his work with Shakespeare by the Sea. He starred in vertical films, all of which were highly rated and received hundreds of millions of views.

With these projects surpassing industry standards and receiving strong critical reception, Silva has starred in other successful projects due to his merit. Producers from different platforms seek him to star in their upcoming films.

Grateful for the opportunities that have come along, Silva shared, “I’ve only had positive experiences in all the vertical films I’ve done. The directors and producers are always so caring and sympathetic towards us (actors), and the cast has always been fantastic, talented, and emotionally supportive.”

Diverse Skills Lead to Big Rewards

While Mario Silva studied Lee Strasberg’s Method, he diversified his talents by learning various techniques from masters like Meisner and Uta Hagen. His diverse skills have allowed him to work with other directors on multiple projects. However, his theater background has also helped him achieve success.

Silva has received numerous awards and nominations, including The Junction Awards 2021, LA Broadway World, and Miami Broadway World best performer nominations in 2024. His acting merits have earned him the Dubai Golden Visa, a permanent residence visa bestowed upon other successful powerhouses like Cristiano Ronaldo and Shah Ruh Khan.

Looking ahead, Silva aims to inspire future generations of artists to fulfill their dreams, embrace fear, and take a leap of faith in their aspirations.

Stephen Joel Brown, a producer known for the hit Netflix series Emily in Paris, partnered with McGregory Frederique and Jonny Walker on their television project C.A.S.E.S..

In an exciting development for the world of legal dramas, Stephen Joel Brown, an co-executive producer renowned for his work on the Netflix hit series ‘Emily in Paris,’ is teaming up with talented creators McGregory Frederique and Jonny Walker on their new project, ‘C.A.S.E.S.’ With over 30 years of experience in the entertainment industry, Brown brings a wealth of expertise and a notable portfolio that includes iconic films such as ‘The Fugitive;  ‘The Devil’s Advocate,’ ‘Twisted,’ ‘Seven,’ and ‘A Perfect Murder.’ His involvement promises to elevate the production value and narrative depth of ‘C.A.S.E.S.,’ ensuring that the show resonates with audiences seeking gripping storytelling.

The origins of ‘C.A.S.E.S.’ trace back to a compelling proof of concept titled ‘The Deal,’ which was both written and directed by the award-winning director McGregory Frederique. ‘The Deal’ has garnered an impressive 17 awards and made a bid for recognition at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, althoug as it fell short of reaching the shortlist for the next round. This impressive track record sets a high bar for ‘C.A.S.E.S.,’ which dives into the morally ambiguous world of legal power dynamics, exploring how far individuals will go to achieve their goals. With a premise that asks, ‘How far are you willing to make a deal with the devil?’ the show promises to challenge viewers’ perceptions of ethics and justice. The collaboration of Frederique, Walker, and Brown is poised to create a legal drama that captivates and provokes thought.

When resilience, faith, and unity come together, extraordinary transformations occur. The documentary Embracing the Dream on Amazon Prime Video captures the Johnson family’s awe-inspiring journey from homelessness to Hollywood fame. This deeply moving film chronicles the family’s trials, triumphs, and enduring belief in the power of love and perseverance.

Dasha and Takela Johnson, founders of Fresh Oil Apostolic Center, embody the power of unwavering faith. In 2002, their family faced the dire challenges of homelessness, public scrutiny, and fractured relationships, yet their determination to support their sons’ creative pursuits never faltered. Their story is a beacon of hope, demonstrating how even the bleakest circumstances can pave the way for greatness.

Embracing The Dream - artwork

The Johnson family’s sacrifices laid the foundation for extraordinary success. Dontrell Johnson emerged as an award-winning songwriter and singer, and Caleb Johnson flourished as a young entrepreneur. However, it is Aaron Johnson’s remarkable journey that stands out as a testament to perseverance and vision.

Aaron began his creative career at just 9 years old, producing videos for Grammy-nominated artist Betty Wright. By 13, he secured a production deal with Wendy Williams Productions, and at 15, he spoke on behalf of Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders at the Diversity Conference in Vermont. At 17, he represented the United States at a major film festival in London, where he won for his acclaimed feature LOST.

Aaron’s accomplishments extend beyond the creative sphere. In recognition of his achievements, Miami’s Mayor Francis Suarez and the City of Miami honored him with his own day and a proclamation. Aaron has shared stages with icons like the late Harry Belafonte, penned four books, and earned accolades such as the 365 Black Award alongside luminaries like Ava DuVernay and Marvin Sapp.

Embracing the Dream offers viewers a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse into how the Johnson family turned adversity into opportunity. Their unwavering support for one another showcases the strength of family bonds and the power of shared faith. Accompanying the documentary is their book, A Family Guide in Faith & Entertainment, available now on Amazon. This guide provides practical insights into balancing faith, ambition, and life’s inevitable challenges.

“This story is for every dreamer,” Aaron shares. “It’s proof that faith, love, and unity can overcome anything.”

Prepare to be inspired by this extraordinary story. Watch the trailer for Embracing the Dream below:

This is more than a documentary; it’s a celebration of resilience, faith, and the pursuit of dreams.

Final Wager” is a whole new kind of Christmas movie. Santa does not make an appearance. Neither do reindeer nor elves. But viewers will never forget that, in the movie, it’s Christmastime. That’s not only because of all the holiday decorations and tunes, but also — and most importantly — because the lead character, a recovering gambling addict named Chance (played by actor and producer Scott Hamm Duenas), discovers he can’t lose a bet on Christmas Day.

In “Final Wager,” the protagonist can’t lose… or can he?

If Chance is a recovering gambling addict, then how does he figure out he can’t lose a bet? He succumbs to the temptation to gamble under only the most intense pressure. On Christmas Eve, he visits his beloved foster mother only to discover that the nursing home that oversees her 24/7 care is going to evict her the day after Christmas.

He asks the facility’s director why, and it turns out that she owes them $64,000.

How is Chance supposed to raise that kind of money in only two short days? In the opening scenes of the movie, we find him $5,000 in the hole, having broken his six-month-long clean streak from gambling. The football games just aren’t going his way.

But Chance is risking a lot more than just failure by starting to make wagers again. He has been planning to propose to his girlfriend (played by actress Fernanda Romero) this Christmas. He even has the ring in his pocket. But she has said she’ll dump him if he ever places another bet.

Late that night, Chance is in debt, farther away from helping his mother than before. He has also started lying to his girlfriend, pretending nothing’s wrong.

In desperation, he calls his gambling addiction counselor, who advises him to go back through his entire history of bets and total up just how much he has lost over the years. He embarks on this grim task when a strange pattern leaps out at him — yes, he has lost an insane sum over the years, but never once has he lost a bet on December 25.

That’s when midnight strikes, and Chance’s luck does a 180-degree turn. Is it Christmas magic? Or is he just fooling himself, as gamblers are famous for doing all too often?

The inspiration for this unique story sprang from an unexpected source.

The Making of “Final Wager”

Actor Scott Hamm Duenas decided to accept the part of Chance soon after reading the script, which was written by Jerry Artukovitch, an Emmy-award-nominated casting director who has worked on major television series such as “The Golden Bachelor,” “America’s Most Wanted,” “The Voice,” and many others.

“Jerry is an old friend of mine, and he sent me this script and said I was perfect for the role of Chance,” Hamm Duenas says. “He went on to say that in fact he wrote it with me in mind. He also made sure to craft this amazing story so it could be made on an indie film budget. Needless to say, I loved the script and wanted to find a way to bring it to life.”

Hamm Duenas’s own previous experiences with gambling attracted him to the story so much that he knew he wanted to help produce it as well as star in it.

“I immediately knew I wanted to produce this film because the script was so near and dear to my heart,” he says. “The sports gambling angle to ‘Final Wager’ hits so very close to home because I’ve been a longtime sports bettor and fantasy football player myself.”

Indeed, he and Artukovitch went on many gambling sprees together. But those days are long over.

“The house always wins,” Hamm Duenas explains. “No matter what unique angle you might think you have as a bettor, it’s not true. You’re still at a disadvantage compared to the oddsmakers. That can be a really expensive lesson to learn, as I know from personal experience. Gambling is no way to make a living.”

It is, however, a great premise for a movie.

“Final Wager”: A Holiday movie with an edge

Like “Bad Santa” and “Die Hard,” “Final Wager” will leave you asking: Is this a Christmas movie or a movie that takes place on Christmas? While Hamm Duenas won’t commit himself to one side or the other, he does enjoy the debate. “I love that angle,” he says.

“Final Wager” has a star-studded cast that includes the renowned Michael Madsen and Tom Arnold. In addition to Hamm Duenas and Artukovitch, director Kenny Yates and Kipp Tribble also serve as producers.

If you’ve ever dreamt about having the power to win every bet, then “Final Wager” is the escapist holiday fantasy for you. It is currently streaming on multiple platforms, including Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google Pay, YouTube, and Fandango.

Once you meet Chance, you’ll thank your own good luck.

Jim Camp, author of “Lead From No,” sees negotiation as a core competency every leader must develop. In fact, his new book explains that “If you lead any number of people, you are continuously negotiating with members of your team.” Leaders looking for ways to gain respect, make connections, and build trust with their teammates will find it in “Lead From No.”

“The strength of a leader-follower relationship is predicated on an underlying and enduring negotiation, where followers ‘decide’ to remain engaged and motivated.” Camp says, “Leaders who recognize the fragile nature of this agreement can avoid making assumptions. Instead of relying on implied authority to direct the actions of others, leaders who respect the decision-making of their teammates build more trust and cohesion.”

Camp is also the co-owner of Camp Negotiations and a retired Major General in the United States Air Force. He served proudly for many years as the Commander of the Ohio Air National Guard and National Guard Assistant to the Commander of the US Transportation Command. His accomplishments as a senior military leader include negotiating the largest pay increase in history for thousands of Air National Guard Instructor Pilots.

In the corporate world, Camp helped build Camp Negotiations as a coach and contributor to the book, “No: The Only System of Negotiation You Need For Work and Home.”  His diverse leadership background, education, and military experiences bring a welcomed perspective to the Camp Negotiations Team.

In “Lead From No,” Camp builds on the foundational negotiation principles his father established in the Camp Negotiation System to provide a fresh approach to negotiation. Camp explains that the power of the approach is found in the willingness to hear and say “no.”

“Collaborating and inviting pushback from your team reinforces the strength of your agreements,” Camp says. “Affording your teammates the right to say ‘no’ is a critical piece of leadership negotiation. Leaders who don’t extend that right shouldn’t be surprised when they lose a teammate.”

A systematic approach that leads to success

Camp’s new book presents a systematic approach to leadership negotiation. While spectators can assume that effective negotiators operate “in the moment,” driving deals forward with a “from the hip” approach, Camp says consistent success in negotiations involves a methodical and organized approach. One of the key strengths of his approach is its ability to remove emotion from the negotiation process.

“Managing our emotions during a negotiation is critical,” Camp says. “Our desired outcome, or ‘need’ for the deal, can become so overwhelming that we lose control of our actions and how we behave. Applying a systematic approach to the process of reaching an agreement provides focus and emotional control. A system for preparation, execution, and debriefing will keep you centered in your opponent’s world, helping you uncover problems, build vision, and understand their decision-making process.”

Throughout his many years of experience with negotiations, Camp has seen how emotion is often the component that causes talks to break down. His instruction and coaching help leaders embrace a mindset that removes emotions from the equation, which keeps them from offering unnecessary compromises inspired by their fear of losing the deal.

Giving each party the right to say ‘no’

Leaders typically hear “no” as a form of rejection or failure. Consequently, it’s a word they try to keep out of the negotiation process, but Camp says this is a mistake.

“When either party says ‘no’ during a negotiation, it’s simply a decision to maintain the status quo, which is a decision that can still be changed,” Camp explains. “Rather than pressuring someone to say ‘yes,’ openly giving your opponent the right to say ‘no’ lowers the emotional pressure common in negotiations. It demonstrates your respect for their decisions and reduces the appearance of your ‘need’ for the deal.”

Camp casts “no” in a new role in the negotiation process. Rather than seeing it as a rejection, he views it as an opportunity to uncover problems and eliminate assumptions. As Camp explains in his book, “no” unlocks the real issues that must be addressed for negotiations to be effective.

Establishing the connection between negotiation and leadership

Camp’s extensive experience in leadership roles has shown him that leading involves much more than leveraging position, title, rank, or authority. To lead effectively, he believes leaders must develop the ability to reach agreements with their teams. His book defines a new type of leader — the leader/negotiator — and shows how to become one.

“The success of any organization relies on negotiated agreements, both internal and external,” Camp says. “Leaders who are lost when it comes to negotiating won’t be able to foster the strong agreements their organizations need. Embracing the concepts in my new book not only leads to better success as a negotiator but also to better success in any leadership position.”

The American Black Film Festival (ABFF Honors) is back and bigger than ever. The 7th annual celebration of Black excellence in film and television will take place on February 17, 2025, at the opulent SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA. This highly anticipated event will be hosted by the multi-talented comedian and actress Zainab Johnson, adding her signature charm and wit to an evening dedicated to recognizing trailblazers in the entertainment industry.

This year’s ABFF Honors will spotlight three extraordinary honorees whose groundbreaking contributions have left an indelible mark on the industry:

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor – Excellence in the Arts Award (Female)
The Oscar-nominated powerhouse, known for her commanding role as Oracene Price in King Richard, will be celebrated for her illustrious body of work and distinguished career achievements. Aunjanue’s career spans film, television, and stage, with notable roles in If Beale Street Could Talk, The Birth of a Nation, and The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel. Up next, she’s set to star in the adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Nickel Boys—a role that’s already stirring buzz in Hollywood.

Giancarlo Esposito – Excellence in the Arts Award (Male)

A true chameleon on screen, Giancarlo Esposito is perhaps best known for his chilling portrayal of Gustavo “Gus” Fring in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. His impeccable range as an actor, director, and producer has earned him multiple Critics’ Choice and NAACP Image Awards. Esposito’s more recent roles in The Mandalorian, The Boys, and Kaleidoscope have cemented his status as a fan favorite. With upcoming appearances in Captain America: Brave New World and The Electric State, his reign as one of Hollywood’s most versatile stars shows no signs of slowing down.

Keke Palmer – Renaissance Award

The multi-hyphenate sensation Keke Palmer will be honored with the Renaissance Award for her transformative impact on the industry. From her unforgettable breakout role in Akeelah and the Bee to her stellar performance in Jordan Peele’s Nope, Keke’s career has been a masterclass in versatility. Beyond acting, she’s a producer, singer, author, and CEO of KeyTV—a platform dedicated to elevating underrepresented creators. As the first Black Cinderella on Broadway and the youngest talk show host in history, Keke continues to break barriers and inspire the next generation.

The Power of Recognition

Jeff and Nicole Friday, co-founders of NICE CROWD and executive producers of the ABFF Honors, shared their excitement for this year’s honorees. “For decades, these incredible ABFF honorees have captivated audiences and shaped the cultural landscape with their groundbreaking work,” they said. “It’s a privilege to honor Aunjanue, Giancarlo, and Keke for their extraordinary contributions to both the industry and our shared culture.” They also noted the special significance of having Zainab Johnson as the host, as her journey from winning the 2013 ABFF Comedy Wings Competition to hosting this prestigious event embodies the festival’s mission to uplift Black talent.

What Makes the ABFF Honors Special?

The ABFF Honors isn’t just another awards show—it’s a celebration of Black excellence in its purest form. This exclusive, non-televised event brings together entertainment’s most influential voices for an intimate dinner and celebration. Launched in 2016 as an extension of the American Black Film Festival (ABFF), the Honors have become a hallmark of awards season. The ABFF was founded in 1997 by Jeff Friday to showcase Black storytelling and create opportunities for Black creatives—a mission that remains at the heart of the ABFF Honors today.

About ABFF and Its Mission

The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) has long been a champion of diversity and inclusion in Hollywood. Over the years, the festival has played a pivotal role in amplifying the voices of Black filmmakers, actors, and storytellers. The ABFF Honors further this mission by shining a spotlight on seasoned performers and creators who continue to shape and challenge the industry’s status quo.

The 2025 Celebration Awaits

The 2025 ABFF Honors promises to be an unforgettable evening filled with elegance, inspiration, and celebration. With sponsors like Cadillac, Ally, and Sony Pictures Entertainment, along with support from Fulton Films GA and SLS Hotel Beverly Hills, the event is poised to deliver a first-class experience.

With a multi-generational perspective, the series not only highlights the pioneers who shaped the genre but also looks ahead to the future of comedy. Black Comedy in America, a new docuseries produced by SMAC Productions and She Ready Productions and hosted by comedians Tiffany Haddish, Chris Spencer, and Ryan Davis

A Legacy of Laughter: The Significance of Black Comedy

As Spencer explained, Black Comedy in America is much more than just a retrospective look at the genre—it serves as an essential cultural document. “Comedy, especially Black comedy, has always been a survival skill,” he remarked. “It’s a way for the community to take what life throws at you and turn it into something that people can laugh about.” The series highlights how Black comedians have used humor to navigate and resist societal challenges, turning pain into power through the art of laughter.

Spencer’s insights go beyond surface-level comedy. He emphasizes that Black comedy is rooted in resilience and the ability to reflect societal injustices while making people laugh. From the trailblazing work of Richard Pryor to the fresh perspective of Tiffany Haddish, the series captures how each generation of comedians has impacted both the industry and the culture at large.

Generational Perspectives: The Evolution of Black Comedy

Black Comedy in America - Show Poster - Vice TV

The show takes a unique approach by bringing together hosts and interviews from different eras, offering an invaluable perspective on how Black comedy has evolved. By featuring voices from various generations, the docuseries captures a tapestry of comedic styles—from the raw, boundary-pushing humor of the ’70s and ’80s to today’s socially aware, boundary-expanding comedy.

Spencer reflected on his experiences, noting how comedy has changed. “The tools we have today are very different from when I started,” he said. “But the heart of it—addressing the issues we face as a community—has remained the same.” The generational approach also shows viewers how comedians have navigated changing societal norms and an increasingly diverse audience.

Comedy as Craft: Adapting to Audiences

A key theme in my conversation with Spencer was the importance of comedians’ ability to adapt. He insists comedy is not just about telling jokes—it’s about understanding and engaging diverse audiences. “It’s about knowing your crowd and reading the room,” Spencer explained. “The art of comedy requires a certain mastery—timing, delivery, context—without it, you lose the audience.”

The docuseries underscores this notion, demonstrating that comedy is both a craft and a reflection of the social landscape. As comedy continues to evolve, so too does the need for performers to hone their skills to reach a broad spectrum of people. “Black Comedy in America” pushes this idea forward, showcasing the vast range of talent that emerges from such adaptability.

The Future of Comedy: Mentorship and Innovation

Looking ahead, Spencer sees “Black Comedy in America” as more than just a historical recount—it’s also about the future. The series sets the stage for discovering new comedic talent as it celebrates mentorship and the passing of the torch. “In comedy, there’s always someone coming up who’s ready to take it further,” Spencer indicated. “We owe it to the next generation to help them find their voice.”

Mentorship has always played a key role in the comedy world, with veteran comics helping newcomers navigate the industry’s complexities. As the docuseries highlights, the comedy community is one of collaboration, where growth is fueled by shared wisdom and innovation.

Comedy as Resistance and Change

Perhaps the most powerful aspect of Spencer’s reflections was his discussion of comedy as resistance. Throughout history, comedy has been a tool for addressing racism, inequality, and the harsh realities of life in America. Whether it’s through biting satire or subtle commentary, Black comedians have often used humor as a vehicle for social change.

The beauty of comedy is that it allows you to say things that others can’t,” Spencer relates. “Comedy gives you the ability to talk about issues like race, class, and identity in a way that makes people listen.” The docuseries is a celebration of that legacy—one that continues to resonate today.

The Enduring Power of Black Comedy

In reflecting on his own journey and the influence of legendary comedians, Spencer underscores the cultural significance of “Black Comedy in America.” The series is more than just entertainment—it’s an exploration of how Black comedians have shaped and continue to shape American culture. From its origins in the lives of trailblazing pioneers to its current landscape of innovation, Black comedy is not just a form of entertainment—it’s a vital part of the ongoing dialogue on race, identity, and social change in America.

“Black Comedy in America” is not just about the jokes—it’s about the stories behind the laughs and how those stories continue to influence future generations. As Spencer puts it, it’s clear that comedy is not just an art form but a powerful survival skill.

In the fast-paced world of urban entertainment, where visuals tell stories as powerfully as words, Dante Hillmedo is a name that commands respect. From capturing the untouchable moments at exclusive events to filming the unguarded sides of some of the industry’s biggest names, Hillmedo has built his career on raw authenticity. Now, with his debut film, Butterfly, he’s shifting from capturing real-life drama to crafting it, bringing a fresh, street-level view of urban life rooted in the Bronx’s unmistakable vibe. Get ready for a film that doesn’t just entertain—it lives and breathes the culture..

Capturing the Essence of Urban Culture

Dante Hillmedo’s journey is deeply rooted in his ability to capture the energy and authenticity of urban entertainment. Reflecting on one of his most memorable moments, he recalls the 2022 Michael Rubin All White Party, where icons like Drake, Lil Durk, and Travis Scott shared the stage in an electrifying moment that embodied the spirit of the culture. “It was a hell of a moment,” he says, highlighting the significance of some of hip hop’s elites sharing the stage at the same time and being the person chosen to capture it exclusively.

For Hillmedo, representing the vibe of the people and brands he works with is key to his success. “You gotta give it life,” he explains, emphasising the importance of understanding each brand’s persona and audience. This focus on authenticity mixed with captivating edits has made his work stand out, allowing him to connect with audiences on a visceral level.

Behind the Glitz: Unseen Realities of Celebrity Life

While fans often see the glamorous side of celebrities, Hillmedo’s lens captures a different reality. “A lot of these celebs have a lot going on. They’re sometimes stressed, and it’s not all glitz and glamour,” he reveals. This perspective is something Hillmedo aims to bring into his filmmaking, offering a more nuanced view of entertainment culture that goes beyond the surface.

Transitioning to Filmmaking: Bringing Realness to the Big Screen

Dante’s first feature film, “Butterfly,” is set in the Bronx, a borough that has influenced much of New York’s urban culture. “Butterfly” pays homage to various dance styles that thrive in the city, from litefeet to Afrobeat and hip-hop, while also telling a story that resonates with immigrant households. “It’s a culture mix of what we love in NY,” he explains, adding that audiences will appreciate the authenticity and spirit he’s infused into the film.

With “Butterfly,” Hillmedo aims to portray the rawness and resilience that define urban life. Drawing from his background in videography, he incorporates elements of real-life scenarios to create a narrative that’s both relatable and true to the culture.

Building a Brand Through High-Profile Connections

Hillmedo has spent years documenting high-profile talent and iconic events, and he’s leveraging that experience to build his brand as a filmmaker. “In the future, I’d love to bring some of these talents into my productions, whether as co-producers or part of the cast,” he shares. Hillmedo’s deep network within the industry not only opens doors for collaboration but also ensures that his projects will reach a wider audience.

This network, along with his credibility as a respected figure in urban culture, allows him to approach collaborations with A-list celebrities and major brands with confidence. Hillmedo believes in creating mutually beneficial relationships and knows the value of proving himself through quality work. “When I have positive results to show, established bodies are more likely to be open to collaborating,” he explains. “You have to provide situations that are mutually beneficial or a situation that shows good upside potential for any potential partners or investors.”

Advice for Aspiring Filmmakers: “Be Good People”

For those looking to follow in his footsteps, Hillmedo emphasises the importance of relationships and character. “Hone your craft, be good people, connections and relationships go a long way. People remember the experience working with you a lot more than the work most of the time, so be good, be smart, be discreet, be respectful, and do great work!” he advises. By focusing on building genuine connections and honing their craft, aspiring filmmakers can carve their own paths in the urban entertainment scene.

The Future: A Vision Rooted in Authenticity

Dante Hillmedo’s journey from behind the camera to the director’s chair reflects his commitment to representing the real and the raw. With a foot firmly planted in urban culture and an eye toward the future, Hillmedo is poised to make a significant impact in the world of filmmaking. “This is just the start,” he says confidently, and for those who value authenticity, his work will surely be something to watch.
