Welcome Back: A Conversation with CWBY
Last week we reintroduced you to this steadily moving artist making a solid return by the moniker of CWBY when he returned to the scene with his latest single “Can’t Get Enough.” The Hype Magazine has been covering his journey since 2020 via various writers and now we have the chance to catch up and get HIS side of the story we’ve been skimming over.
Join the conversation via our Q&A below:
Journey to the West: What motivated you to leave your home state of Florida and venture to places like Las Vegas and Los Angeles in pursuit of your dreams?
Well, I never had a plan of what I wanted or dreamed of. I just know I wanted more, to figure out who I was and test myself. I was never a singer, I had zero talent or knowledge about anything in the music or entertainment business and decided to take my first vocal lesson in 2020 and just ran with it ever since. Becoming a singer and an artist has been the toughest thing I have done and I’ve come this far and I want to see where I can take it.
Cannabis Cowboy Origins: How did your experience in the cannabis industry influence your journey and eventual discovery of your musical talent?
Well as you can imagine, the cannabis industry is just about as cutthroat as the music industry is, if not worse. I’ve been through a lot of highs and lows and I’ve been able to write about a lot of my journey in one way or another.
Musical Discovery: Can you tell us more about that moment in the studio when a producer heard you singing Bon Jovi songs? How did that pivotal moment shape your music career?
It was actually my best friend who heard me singing a small snippet of a Bon Jovi song where I happened to hit a couple notes correctly and he is the one who pushed me to sing. However, the engineer we were working with insisted on giving me a vocal warmup and I noticed an immediate difference. From there I realized the same thing as everything else I’ve done…it’s going to take a sh*t ton of work, but it’s possible…
Genre Fusion: Your music is a unique blend of Country, Trap, and Pop. How did you come to develop this distinctive style, and what influences have shaped your sound?
Well just like I left for the west coast with zero plan. I came into making music with 0 plan except to create. If I listened to a beat and liked it, then I would write to it. If a beat can spark an initial memory or topic in my head then I’m writing about it. The inspiration is usually pulled after the start of the song when someone realizes and says “Oh this kind of reminds me of this song or this artist” and then we pull the inspiration to make the production more rock, more country, more vocal stacks, 808’s mixed with live drums, etc.
Future Endeavors: As an artist with a soulful voice and a larger-than-life personality, what future projects or goals do you have in mind to continue captivating your audience?
Well, I have been writing and stacking music for 4 years now. I have enough music for 3 albums easily. Right now I am releasing singles and putting myself out there, but I have a lot of records I’m sitting on that are more about the lead-up to me becoming an artist. My vision is to first release the I AM CWBY album and a short film along with it.
